Student Subject and Activities Fees
Parents have this week received an up-to-date statement for subject and activities fees. Can I please ask that these statements are reconciled by the end of Term 3. It is the College expectation that student accounts be up-to-date prior to students choosing a fee-based sport for Term 4.
If any families have difficulties in meeting payments, please do not hesitate to contact the College Office.
Student Success
The last two weeks have been an extremely busy time for our Year 12 students. In addition to completing their trial exams we had our Dance and Drama students complete their final HSC Practical Exam for external markers and our Timber and Textiles students submit their final major works for marking.
Below are just a few photos of their outstanding works. I will include more in coming newsletters.

Student Leadership
Throughout this week I have had the pleasure of meeting with our eight nominees for the 2021 College Captain and Vice-Captain Leadership positions. WOW... what an impressive group of young men and women. Each of them spoke about the importance of community, of wanting to help every student feel a part of, and having opportunities to participate in all of the many wonderful opportunities here at MacKillop College. Each of them spoke fondly of the positive relationships they have with peers, and importantly their teachers, and how they hoped they could leave a legacy of having all students feel like this as they journeyed through their high school days. I look forward to working with the group into the future.
Parent Partnership
Further to the letter sent home to Year 12 parents and carers this week please find below some great resources from the NSW Education Standards Authority to help parents assist their sons and daughters through the HSC.
Resources for parents of HSC students - NSW Education Standards Authority
This year’s HSC is different due to COVID-19. Information is available on the NESA website to clearly answer parents’ questions about the HSC exams.
The health and wellbeing of HSC students is more important than any exam, which is why we are encouraging students to:
- Stay connected
- Take time out for rest or exercise
- Ask for help.

Meet the Experts
This week's Meet the Expert is our Leader of Evangelisation Marg Gobius.
Name: Marg Gobius
What subject(s) do you teach?
Religion and Studies of Religion.
What high school did you attend?
Mount Erin and Trinity Senior High School in Wagga Wagga.
What university did you attend and what course(s) did you do after finishing school?
I received my Bachelor of Education in Science and Theology through Catholic College of Education, Strathfield, which later became the Australian Catholic University. In 2015 I received my Master of Religious Education through the Australian Catholic University.
What or who inspired you to become a teacher?
My sister's Year 6 teacher, who shared his experience of being a Lay Missionary on Thursday Island. What would be your proudest teaching moment in your career to date?
Working as a Lay Missionary in Samoa for 3 years, teaching Science and Maths in a school where the students owned very little, but had a deep love of learning. What are you reading at the moment?
"No Friend but the Mountain" by Behrouz Boochani.
This book was written by a Kurdish journalist who was illegally detained as a refugee on Manus Island from 2013 until 2020, when he was finally accepted to live in New Zealand. His story is haunting, especially since it was put together through tweets, texts, phone calls and emails sent to Australia on his mobile phone, from Manus Island to Australia, in order to report what was happening within the detention centre.
What quote best describes your approach to teaching?
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (Philippians 4:6)
Favourite non-work related hobbie?
Walking, bike riding and gardening.
What do you love most about your work?
Giving students the opportunity to explore their faith and to support them on this journey.

Vinnies Winter Appeal
In the Gospel from this coming Sunday Jesus said “where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am with them,” (Mt 18:20), reminding us that Jesus is with us in all that we do in his name. We could see the face, hands and feet of Jesus in the efforts of all those who offered donations and money in our Vinnies Winter Appeal – a huge thank you to all the generous people who donated clothes and blankets to the appeal and for the money raised during our last week of the Appeal.
On Thursday, we had our Vinnies Fashion Day where students were encouraged to wear at least one article of clothing purchased at Vinnies or any other Op Shop. We offered awards to students within each PC for the ‘Best Dressed” and the “Wackiest Outfit”. Thanks to those who participated and shared a gold coin donation to our Vinnies Appeal.

Last week, the Corner Restaurant generously donated milk, cups and chocolate powder for our Hot Chocolate fundraiser, which took place at recess on the Junior campus – many thanks to our Year 9 Youth Ministry class who gave up their recess to serve others, raising some funds for the Vinnies Appeal.

Dear MacKillop College
Thanks so much for supporting the St Vincent de Paul Society.
Your gift of $1268.25 allows the St Vincent de Paul Society to provide more than immediate help, it provides something much more valuable - the opportunity of a better life.
We couldn't do it without you. Thanks to your donation, we can provide support to Australians doing it tough.
Regards,The Vinnies Team

HSC Prayer Sponsors
In his letter to the Philippians, Paul reminded us to “not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Phil 4:6), and from experience many of us know the power of prayer in our lives. Knowing that someone is praying for you is a source of great strength and consolation, especially during a particularly challenging time that we have experienced this year.
We appeal to parents, family and friends of our Year 12 HSC cohort to make themselves available as a prayer sponsor. If you are interested in being a Prayer Sponsor for a Year 12 student from any of the St Agnes’ Parish Secondary Schools, please phone during office hours in the next few weeks and leave your name and details.
MacKillop College 02 6583 2632
St Joseph’s Regional College 02 5525 4100
Newman Senior Technical College 02 6580 3800
We have invited Year 12 students who wish to be sponsored in prayer to submit their names and their HSC subjects to us. We invite parents to encourage their child to take up this beautiful opportunity through the google form we have provided them with.
We will allocate their name to a sponsor who has volunteered to pray for a student at this time. Each sponsor will receive information before the exams begin on 20th October:
- the name and photo of the student;
- the prayer offered;
- the times of the student’s HSC exams.
Thanks in anticipation of your help.

Code of Presentation – Emerging Issues
Following the email to parents this week, I would like to remind you of two emerging issues regarding the Code of Presentation.
- Hairstyles: The current 'footy mullet' (mo-hawk) which is trending among sports stars is NOT considered an appropriate hairstyle for the standard of presentation expected at MacKillop College. Students have been given until Monday of Week 8 to ensure their hair does meet the standards of the Code of Presentation. If a student presents to school after Monday with this hairstyle they will be asked to return home until such time as the hairstyle has been rectified.
- Incorrect shoes: A growing number of students are wearing canvas or skate type shoes which are not all leather as per formal uniform guidelines, nor are they appropriate footwear to be wearing for sport or practical lessons. Students are also asked to have this rectified by next Monday please.
Many thanks for your ongoing support.

Technology Classes
This week saw the changeover for technology classes and students have moved on to enjoy yet another area of the Technology course. Some will find this change a challenge and for others, it will be welcomed. Regardless, it is key that students embrace the learning opportunities placed before them. Please note that this change may also require students needing to wear protective footwear, that is leather upper shoes. It is important that students get used to this change in their timetable to ensure no practical classes are missed due to inappropriate footwear.
Pastoral Care Time
The focus this week in PC has been positive relationships. In light of our recent bullying survey where students listed a range of suggestions for making sure the College is a safe and caring place, PC's spent time and undertook a range of activities, continuing to build and maintain such an environment.
Students suggested things such as:
- Be nice
- Do not yell or swear at others
- Remind people to be respectful
- Be polite
- Show care for others
- Be kind
- Appreciate each other’s differences
- Stand up for each other
- Don't tease others
- Ask others to join in if they seem alone
- Check in with each other to make sure they are OK
- Do not judge others
- Think before we speak or act
- Use our manners
- Say positive things
- Be responsible and treat others as you would like to be treated
- Talk about our feelings with others
- Be alert and do not accept any bullying at school
Year Meeting
During this week’s Year meeting students gathered for the first time in weeks as a Year group, maintaining the requirement of coming together for less than 15 minutes as our number of students is over 100. It was wonderful to come together and we used the time to watch the performance of the Dance Ensemble 1 and 2, featuring a number of talented Year 7 students. Mr Adam Kelly, our Assistant Principal – Curriculum, also attended the meeting and spoke about Electives for 2021.

Congratulations
Congratulations to the following students who have received a Silver Principal’s Award: MC Cameron, Georgie Healey, Cooper Lorger, Jamali Middlebrook, Cory Thiele and Alexander Toth.
Congratulations to the following students who have received a Pastoral Coordinator’s Award: Macey Arkinstall, Jamison Barlow, Ashley Bell, Jasmine Bewicke, MC Cameron, Ryan Cook, Isaac Freeman, Ethan Glover, Benjamin Goldie, Georgie Healey, Ishaan Jamnadas, Cooper Lorger, Oliver Marchant, Olivia McGahon, Jamali Middlebrook, Matthew Nottle, Saxon Ritter, Cory Thiele, Alexander Toth and Bindi Zimmerman.
Year 7 Leader of Pastoral Care
On Friday, 11th September, Year 8 students will experience Catch The Wave. This mini retreat introduces students to a model of student discipleship supported by enrolling to the ministry focused Religious Education class.
Normally this is delivered as a full Year group whole day retreat, however Covid-19 restrictions have forced us to creatively adapt the existing Catch The Wave program into a two period experience that will be delivered in groups of around 75 students.
Following their Catch the Wave mini retreat, students will be invited to volunteer to the Ministry Religious Education class for Years 9 and 10. This is by no means the easy option. Students in this class follow not only the usual Religious Education curriculm, but experience additional ministry based units. Students in the ministry based (CSYMA) participate in a number of inside and outside of school hours ministry experiences.
This is a great option for any student wishing to nurture their faith or explore their curiosity about faith.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Shaun Baillon who has received a Pastoral Coordinator’s Award.
God bless.
Year 8 Leader of Pastoral Care
Congratulations
Congratulations to all Year 12 students, who have now finished their HSC trial exams and as such, have completed all school based assessments for their HSC. In addition to this the Timber, Textiles and Drama students have now all completed their major works. These projects have been four Terms in the making with a great deal of extra effort, and extra hours going into these projects. It is so wonderful to see the talent of these students and the final products are all amazing! I most enjoy watching the students experience the feelings of accomplishment, and relief, that has come from working so hard towards a goal and achieving it.
On Friday, we enjoyed a lunchtime concert from the Year 12 Music students who performed some of their pieces for their HSC. Again, I was in awe of the talents of our students. Good luck to these students as well as the Art students who still have their practical components to perform or hand in.
Importance of the next few weeks
The next few weeks of school will be fundamental in the learning process for Year 12 students, as such attendance on all school days is compulsory.
History tells us that the most significant increase in HSC performance will occur over the next few weeks. This is a time where students have the opportunity to cement their learning and refine their skills for each subject. In subjects where the required content has been completed, teachers have constructed rigorous revision programs that will involve practice HSC questions, provide time for one-on-one feedback and ensure that your son/daughter is appropriately prepared for the HSC. They will also be involved in a review of their trial papers for each subject where areas of weakness will be identified and strategies devised to improve.
Each student will have ample work to do both at school and at home over the last few weeks of this Term. It is not the time for students to become complacent, it is time for them to use every resource and opportunity to ensure they are prepared for the HSC.
Fun and Games
We have plenty of fun activities planned at the College for the students to be involved, to help them enjoy the last part of this year. I will be sure to get photos and share them over the coming weeks.
Thank you
It has been a wonderful couple of years with this group of young people. The relationship with families has really made what could have been a tough 2020, much more bearable. Please trust that we are doing all we possibly can to make sure their farewell and rite of passage is as special as possible. I trust that you will have your own special plans to mark this milestone and that the students will still look back with fond memories of their final year of schooling.

R U OK?
Thursday, 10th September is R U OK? Day. This is a day dedicated to inspiring and empowering everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them by asking the simple question “Are you OK?”.
Young people often turn to their parents during tough times. Now could be a great time to ask your child “Are you OK? and to support them in the event that they are struggling.

However, as we all know, having a meaningful conversation with teenagers can be tricky.
ReachOut Australia has created resources to help parents help their young people.
You can find out via these links, tips to effectively communicate with your child and some practical strategies to try to engage your teenager in a meaningful conversation.
Our SRC 2020 will promote awareness of the importance of checking in with their peers and What to say after R U OK? next week.

Rehearsals and Recordings
Due to the recent advice from the NSW Health Department related to group activities in schools the nature of ensemble rehearsals has changed. For the coming weeks we are moving to a recording schedule whereby students will individually record their parts from recent repertoire to a backing track. These recordings will be mixed in the hope of being able to share a quality recording with students and families.
Recordings for Week 8 are as follows;
Tuesday, 8th September: Choir (J15/16 and Percussion Room)
Wednesday, 9th September: Senior Vocal Ensemble - Year 12 ONLY (J16)
Thursday, 10th September: Concert Band - Year 7 and 8 woodwind and brass ONLY (J15/16 and Percussion Room)
Please be aware that SAPSS Marching Band has been placed on hold for the remainder of Term 3. Therefore, no rehearsal will take place until further notice.
