100 Life skills to teach teens
Every so often I read an article where I think “that would be great to share with parents.” Having young adults, all in recent years entering university, the workforce or moving away from home has been a great insight into what skills we as parents may have overlooked or missed in preparing F1, M1 and F2 for, as F2 calls it “this adulting game.”
I thought it might be an interesting family exercise for MacKillop parents to do with your young person(s) to see how many of the 100 they have or perhaps don’t yet have. Have a read below.
Student Success
Congratulations to Year 12 student Emma Highlands who has been awarded the Roma Liggins Scholarship at the Taree and District Eisteddfod.
Congratulations also to Year 12 student Ryan Binskin who won the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges Cross Country.
Both students are wonderful examples to their peers and younger students of commitment to their chosen fields.
Coffs Harbour Dance Eisteddfod
Last Friday, 10 June, selected MacKillop College students performed beautifully at the Coffs Harbour Eisteddfod. It was a very tough competition with Palm Beach Currumbin dominating the event with their 80 plus dance excellence team.
Our Year 8-11 group took out 3rd place which was an absolutely fantastic result. Especially when some students don't practise dance outside of school. The Year 7 group performed with energy and had a great time. Well done to all involved and thank you to Jamanda Eggert for facilitating the attendance of our students.

Face of Jesus
The first two hours of the staff Development Day last Friday were dedicated to Leading Formation for Mission. The process led staff to a recognition of their role as being both professional and a vocation.
Profession: A person competent or skilled in a particular activity, which is their main paid occupation.
Vocation: Your vocation is the way God invites you to love and give yourself to others.
86% of staff responded that they viewed their role in the school as both profession and vocation.
Additionally, staff were asked to consider a number of focus questions:
What does it mean to be a staff member in a Catholic School?
Tell us about a value you see as important in a Catholic school community?
Who is someone in the school who you see as the face of Jesus?
How would staff and students know that your actions are guided by faith?
This assisted many staff members in being able to recognise their individual and collective importance in acting as witness. In witnessing to their faith, each member of staff is called upon to be the face of Jesus to all in the school community
Your vocation is the way God invites you to love and give yourself to others. It is not simply the giving of your skills, services and expertise, but the giving of your whole self as a path to holiness.
We also gave consideration to the values that staff believed were most important to impart to student.
This image shows both the range and proportion of the responses from staff.
In table groups of five or six, staff then discussed the values and attempted to create a top six values list in priority order. We will collate this data and use it at our term three professional development day to determine the six prime values promoted at MacKillop College.
Corpus Christi
Thursday, 16 June saw the celebration of the Feast of Corpus Christi (The Body and Blood of Christ).
Michael Fallon, a Missionary of the Sacred Heart (msc) Priest has written a truly inspiring and inviting reflection on the Body and Blood of Christ. May it nourish your spirit, heart, mind and hands… to be the body of Christ in our world today.
God bless

Connect and Belong Day
Thursday of this week Year 8 students came together to celebrate in the Connect and Belong Day.
The Connect and Belong day is designed to offer students the opportunity to explore what it means to belong, and endeavours to help all students access the messages of connection, faith, belonging, gratitude, scripture, forgiveness, fun and relationship in an authentic way. Sessions involved topic such as:
Connect with others
- Connect with others and show love.
- Love your neighbour as yourself.
- Forgiveness.
Connect with God
- Reflect on where and who God is in our lives personally.
- Mindfully taking time to slow down.
- Building our Relationship Bank Accounts.
- Considering ways to increase our connection, peace and love
Belonging - many parts of the same world
- Consider our relationship to the world around us, and how we can connect to something bigger.
- Sharing our gratitude with others and our gratitude for others.
- Exploring a sense of belonging and how we are all connected.
This was such a great day and it was great to see students connecting in such a positive way.

SRC Activity - Musical Chairs
The Year 9 Student Representative Council (consisting of Adam Bryant, Miya Freeman, Milly McGrath, and Tyler Morris) approached me wanting to run a whole Year 9 activity during our Week 7 Extended PC. They decided on musical chairs. I must admit, I was nervous at the thought of 225, 14-15 year olds playing musical chairs, but I was very glad to be proven wrong. The entire year group enjoyed the activity and got completely involved. The SRC took charge and ran the whole activity without a hitch.
Each PC had their own small game running and the winners of each game came together and battled it out for the overall musical chairs champion. Congratulations to Miliana Grieve who won the final game (with an injured ankle) and acquired a large bag of chocolates for her PC, 9 Oxley 3.

You Choose - Youth Road Safety Presentation
Back in Week 6, Year 11 and 12 students took part in the You Choose Youth Road Safety, Australia's youth-led mission to change driving culture led by Melissa McGuinness. The presentation was a powerful, hard hitting and emotional reminder to our young people about the dangers of reckless driving on our roads.
The program challenged students to consider how they will personally seek leadership in road safety, live life to its fullest, protect their loved ones; and be truly accountable in situations where they need to place their safety and wellbeing at the forefront of decision making.
The feedback from students, staff and parents was overwhelmingly positive and I encourage you to spend some time talking to your young person about their driving habits and driving culture if you have not already done so.
Push Up Challenge
The mental health of your young people is extremely important and at MacKillop we are currently taking part in the Push Up Challenge, raising awareness for this crucial cause. Students in all Year 11 PC classes are participating in the challenge, doing their push ups every morning in class. Last week Year 11 and 12 students took part in a breakfast during Extended PC which was designed to create unity and culture among the senior students. Students were encouraged to spend some time ‘checking in” with their peers in order to promote positive mental health. Posters were made by the students in PC highlighting the importance of positive mental health and relationships. The students then made their way to the senior oval for some push up challenges and fun activities.
Art Walk
Some of our talented Year 11 Music students took part in the Art Walk last Friday night as part of the MacKillop College Saxophone Ensemble. Situated near the Northpoint Thai Restaurant, the group played a variety of tunes entertaining the crowd of people who had stopped to watch and listen. Congratulations to Ewan Hughes, Callum Pender-Buchan, Zac Tay and Wilson Minogue who showcased their musical talents on the night.

Push Up Challenge
MacKillop College is for the second year in a row participating in the Push Up Challenge. Our seniors started the tradition in 2021 and this year we have asked all PCs and staff to join us. Olivia Nichols, our Push Up Challenge Ambassador, launched the initiative at assembly and then also promoted it through a Seven News interview (if you would like to view please see attached), supported by Hugh Turnbull, Lucy Kay, Katie Duffy and Year 12 PDHPE. The Push Up Challenge has participants completing 3,139 push ups in 24 days - all in the name of mental health. This task we have embarked upon is testing and developing our perseverance, which is our signature Character Strength focus for this term. It is the perfect activity to physically embody persisting past our previous physical limits, and pushing through the barriers, both mental and physical, we place upon ourselves when things are difficult.
At MacKillop we are committed to using our strengths to raise awareness about mental health and the importance of wellbeing. We are all working hard to achieve our main goal - which is to make mental health conversations seen as normal conversations with no stigma attached. Every morning in the notices there is a mental health fact and a push up target for the day; at the time of writing our MacKillop Push Up Community had completed in excess of 40,000 push ups. Pretty amazing!! Looking after the wellbeing of our young people is paramount, as is working together to support our wider community, and if doing a push up for each of the 3,139 people that committed suicide in 2020 gets one person to ask someone if they are okay, or gets one person to reach out for help then it's a job well done.
Usually I sign off with 'have a great weekend' (which I absolutely want for you) but this time I would like my parting words to be a challenge. This weekend I challenge you to have at least one conversation with a friend, loved one, neighbour or whoever and ask them how they are going, not in that Australian way where the answer is always good, but take the time to ask them how they are really going. Who knows it could be just what they needed.

U13 Country Cup
The U13 boys competed in the Country Cup Rugby League competition on Tuesday, 31 May led by their captains, Mason White and Arthur Schmude. The boys started the day with a convincing 22-0 win over Hastings Secondary College. Stirling Wickham and Jack McGrath both scored their first of three tries for the day during this opening game.
A strong St Joseph’s Regional side then handed the boys their only loss despite some solid defensive efforts by Darcy Middleton, Jackson Hollis and Quinn Hancock.
The boys regrouped for their last game, defeating Camden Haven High School 26-16 following tries from Mason White and Blaze Colthorpe. All the boys are to be commended on their efforts and displays of sportsmanship throughout the entire day.

U15 Country Cup
A successful day for the team finishing undefeated and winners of their division after games against Camden Haven High School, St Joseph's Regional College and St Paul’s College, Kempsey. The team showed great effort and cohesion despite limited preparation and the mix of rugby and rugby league players.
All boys gave 100% with special mention to Tim Broderick who was our most outstanding player on the day. He was supported well by Jake Morgan, Jack Randall and Hunter Mayes. Lucas Scott and Cooper Lorger showed great control and leadership in each match.

Country Cup – U18
The Under 18 Boys' Rugby League team continued their impressive form at the Country Cup qualifying round held in Port Macquarie two weeks ago.
While we lost a couple of key forwards the day prior due to injury and illness, the boys put on a solid performance finishing the day undefeated. They now progress to the Country Cup Regional Finals to be held in Port Macquarie next week. Congratulations to Ethan Clarke who was named Best and Fairest.

Game 2: MacKillop was able to get the victory with Sam Howard scoring twice, Koby Atkins and Lewis Shipway all getting points.
Game 3: MacKillop put 20 points on St Paul's College, Kempsey with Sam Young, Hudson McNeil, Max Clifton and Cruz Lewis all going under the posts.

7/8 Girls' A Team
Congratulations to the Year 7 and 8 girls who managed to convincingly win all four games in their pool. Unfortunately they lost by five goals to St Columba Anglican School in the playoff. The game was very competitive and beyond a few unfortunate turnovers, it could have gone either way.
All girls played exceptionally well and supported each other during the day. I was impressed with the sportsmanship and commitment shown by all.

7/8 Boys' Team
Congratulations to all the boys who played in the 7/8 boys Netball Schools Cup.
The 7/8 Gold Team went through the day undefeated with new recruit and youngster Noah Pociask stealing the show with his precision goal shooting. Notable mentions go to birthday boy and key player Jesse Andrews along with Jack Merrick who brought the ball up the court with ease. Flynn Burrage kept our ‘Against’ points low with his incredible agility down the defensive end. Overall, all the boys showed great teamwork and sportsmanship representing MacKillop College. The team consisted of Noah Pociask, Cruz Lews, Sam Ramke, Jesse Andrews, Jack Merrick, Harley Cottom, Flynn Burrage, Jack Ryan and Riley Bates.
Congratulations to the boys in the 7/8 Black Team who also made it through to the Regionals Finals. All students had a fantastic day with every player improving throughout the four games played. The team consisted of Alex Jordan, Bailey Rowlatt, Lewis Shipway, Sam Ayton, Cooper Dekker, Patrick Green, Koby Atkins, Alex Slavin, Jack McGrath and Chase Thompson. A special mention to Alex, Lewis, Patrick, Koby and Chase who joined the team the day before the competition due to original team members being unavailable.
Well done to all of the boys and to Jack McGrath who was the Best and Fairest on the day.
Both teams had a very successful day and have made it through to the North Coast Regional Finals in August. Congratulations 7/8 Boys!

9/10 Girls' Team
What a super Team! We had such a great day despite the cold.
Our toughest game was definitely against St Colulmba Anglican School. A few nervous jitters, but like in every game once the girls settled in they just meshed beautifully.
Outstanding shooting from both Tallara Duck and Piper Wilson all day with a whopping 141 goals scored during the day. Both Tallara and Piper showed such a calm and consistent shooting style that left players and opponents in awe!
A very hard decision to choose only one girl for the player of the match, but it would have to go to Emma Burge for her consistent approach and unwavering commitment to any position you give her. Emma had a few tough opponents on the day and always played her absolute best.
Undefeated on the day, we look forward to round two in August!

9/10 Boys' Team
Thank you to all boys who trialled for the 9/10 boys team this year. It was a hard selection but our team certainly did a great job representing the school at the local carnival.
Despite having minimal training before the carnival, our team had a successful day and will go through to the North Coast Regional Finals, to be held in Term 3. The boys were faced with personal challenges this year with a few of our players having a very busy schedule with other sporting and work commitments. Despite this they played hard and rallied as a team, responding very well to the coaching and feedback that was given to them. All boys were fine ambassadors for MacKillop, playing with determination and displaying good teamwork and sportsmanship.
The boys in the 9/10 team are Tom Ryan, Joshua Bell, Tobias Toohey, Riley Harmer, Cooper Lorger, Joseph Post, Tana Marino, Toby Harper and Xavier Proud.
Best and Fairest for the day was Riley Harmer.
A special thank you always goes to our umpires who did a fantastic job all day. Without them we cannot attend these events. Our umpires were Grace Dawson, Toni Stone, Makayla Mott, Makya Carney, Lara Inman, Lane Jordan, Meredith Davies, Brianna Moloney and Charlotte Weatherley.
Finally, a shout out and thank you to Noel Stevenson for meeting us at the ground and assisting with shade shelters. It’s greatly appreciated.

Bill Turner Boys - Round 3
The Bill Turner Boys' team travelled to St Columba Anglican School to play the third round. We started positively and had two good chances to open the scoring. However, St Columba took control of the game and dominated possession. They converted their chances and went in at halftime with a three goal lead.
We came out second half looking to attack but St Columba were too good for us on the day and ran out 7-0 winners.
Credit to our boys as they never gave up and kept trying to the very end. We wish St Colomba all the best in the next round

Bill Turner Girls Round v St Columba Anglican School
Our girls went into the third round of the state wide Bill Turner Knock Out competition against St Columba Anglican School slightly nervous knowing that the opposition had several representative players.
This did not deter the girls from sticking to our game plan of possession and pressing hard in defence. Off the back of solid defence our girls had a lot of freedom in attack with Zora Boskovski scoring in the first 2 minutes closely followed by a great solo goal from Arliah Morris. Zora scored a goal going into half time to put us in a convincing position.
St Columba had some opportunities, however our backline and goal keepers were cool under pressure. Zora scored two goals alongside Charlee Bailey finding the net twice to well and truly seal a 7-0 win for the girls. Congratulations to Zora Boskovski on being named Best and Fairest – such a dominating performance.
I am so proud of the girls and how well they are playing together as a team.
NSWCCC Touch Football
Congratulations to Tana Marino who made the possible probables at the recent NSWCCC Open’s Touch Football trials. This is not an easy trial in the format that the trial was played in – Tana we are proud of your achievement.
NSWCCC Hockey Schools Championships – Junior and Open Boys
MacKillop College has a proud and decorated history of participating in the Combined Catholic Colleges Hockey Tournament. This year's event was hosted over two days in Bathurst. Having such a strong hockey community presence at Mackillop College, we were fortunate to field a Junior and Open Boys' team.
Well before the tournament, recruitment and team selection started. Early morning training sessions enabled teams to hone fundamentals skills and formulate player positions. In a fashion of ‘iron sharpening iron’, a friendly yet competitive rivalry developed between the Open and Junior Boys. James Ferguson and Tom Moreton, two exceptional goalkeepers, proved to be impenetrable fortresses of defence during our training games.
Junior Boys
Fielding a Junior Boys' team proved difficult for many schools, as only students in Year 7 to 9 are eligible. Red Bend College (RBC) from Forbes was the only other school to register a Junior team. As such, the Junior Boys were required to play in the Open Boys' division. Captained by Tobias and James, the MacKillop Junior Boys were ready for this opportunity.
Galeforce rain with a minus five degree wind chill greeted the boys for their first game. A grand final medal match showdown with Red Bend College. With encouragement from assistant coach George Worner, in a tightly contested game, Mackillop came away with the silver CCC medal.
The boys would go on to play in the open division and finals. Taking out 5th position overall. A loss against the ‘Mountain Men’ from Trinity Catholic College, Goulburn and convincing wins against St Francis Xavier College, Hamilton and McAuley College, Grafton.
Ethan Maher, normally a forward, slotted well into defence, issuing a commanding presence. New recruits to the game, Mitchell Yates and Jarvis Lineham worked the ball effortlessly around the backline, turning defence into attack opportunities.
Tobias Toohey juggled the ball seamlessly through defenders' sticks, dispatching passes with accuracy. Ajay Sen Gupta, always ready to pounce, inserted himself into the game poking holes in the defence and pressuring the goal line.
Chase Thompson and Ashton Newton proved to be a force to be reckoned with on the wings. Agility and speed catching the opposition out, time and time again. This created opportunities to weave the ball into the goal line area for some fantastic team ‘shots on goal’.
Oliver and Henry Wootton, the ‘Bash Brothers’ showed versatility as defenders and forwards, switching up positions when the need arised. The only problem was Mr Jones’ confusion of who was Oliver and who was Henry when coaching from the sideline.
The G.O.A.T Goal Keeper, James Ferguson turned heads with remarkable skills. Eligible to play juniors, James ‘stepped up’ to play with the boys. Cool under pressure, he was able to defend countless salvos into the goal area. This gave our Junior Boys reassurance in defence.
Congratulations on the Silver CCC Medal - Junior Boys.
Open Boys
Playing hockey on a grass field is difficult at the best of times. Due to the draw, Open Boys played on a frost covered, bumpy grass field for their first games. This was against the defending champs, Red Bend College. The first ball of play saw Charlie Ford catch a rogue defected ball to his face, splitting his cheek open. After a quick repair, he was back in action. The first game resulted in a loss, but the Open Boys were determined to make it their last.
Resounding wins against St Edward's College, Gosford and McAuley College, Grafton placed the MacKillop College Open Boys second in their pool. A semi-final game against Trinity Catholic College, Goulburn was drawn. In a nail biting game, the Open Boys were narrowly defeated.
A bronze medal match was now the last opportunity; this was against the Red Bend College Junior team (winners against our Junior Boys team). Early goals saw MacKillop take the lead and victory was imminent. A controversial penalty conceded saw Red Bend level the game. At full time, in a stalemate, both teams were awarded the bronze CCC medal.
Captained by Year 12 students Jared Waters and Tom Moreton, the senior team was in capable hands. As elder statesmen of the team, this was their last opportunity to bring a CCC Hockey medal home for the College. Peter Farrugia was called in, out of recent retirement, to coach the Open Boys through the Championship.
Seasoned veterans of the game Ross Aird and Fynn Slade showed masterful class in attacking and controlling the ball around the field, maintaining possession and controlling the pace of the game. Cody Mills' foresight in reading the opposition provided instincts in making great tackles, turning over the ball to our favour.
Charlie Ford, persevering with a patched up cheek, turned the opposition inside-out with his dazzling stick work. Tobias Toohey, doubling up games, injected his youthfulness and energy into the game. Running the ball strongly and linking the ball up to our attacking wingers.
Andrew Yates and Elliot Worner, new recruits to the game yet you wouldn't have noticed that. A tenacious grit and determination saw the two make their impact on the game. The boys' clean trapping and meticulous passing allowed open and free flowing play to happen.
The backs, defensively, were juggernauts. Goalkeeper Tom Moreton rallied his defensive line consisting of Riley Harmer and Josh Bell. The opposition were no match for a charging and sliding Tom in goals and Josh and Riley, working the ball out of danger.
Jared Waters continued to rally and inspire the Open Boys. Brilliant ball control and wonderful 3D work on the stick saw Jared net many goals.
Well done Open Boys on the Bronze CCC medal.

NSWCCC Hockey Schools Championships – Girls
A chilly Bathurst welcomed our teams for the 2022 CCC Tournament. All teams were prepared and the girls packed many layers to ensure that all weather options were covered. We had two strong wins on the first day, 5-1 and 2-0 but knew that our early morning Wednesday game against Trinity College, Lismore would be tough. We went down 0-1 in a passionate game of hockey. This meant that in our knockout quarter final we would face off against McCarthy College, Tamworth - the team we played three years ago as juniors in the grand final! The girls fought hard but were unfortunate to concede two goals in a tough match and our tournament was over. We rugged up and made as much noise as possible supporting the boys to their medal wins throughout the rest of the day.
Congratulations go to the whole team for working together so well and having a great tournament. Thank You to Gretel Worner for helping me manage and support the team.
Farewell to our Year 12s Domi, Sam, Lacee and Liv, thank you for all you have done for MacKillop Hockey in your time here at the college.
Congratulations to Dominica Toohey, Samanatha Thresher and Zara Ferguson on their selection to the CCC Open Girls Team for 2022.

Congratulations to all of our runners who ran so well and special mention to Ryan Binksin – 1st in the State. WOW - we know how hard you have been training over the years to take out first place. Ryan you are such a talented athlete and a humble one at that. You should be so very proud of yourself and deserve every accolade. You are setting a fine example for other runners to aspire to.
Congratulations to Kiana Osmond-Dreyer, Dominica Toohey, Freycin Hostettler and Preston Davis who all finished in great positions and will accompany Ryan as part of the NSWCCC team when they compete at the upcoming NSW All Schools Cross Country. Well done everyone.
All Schools' Diving
Congratulations to Bronte McAllister and Riley Judd who both ranked 5th at the recent All Schools' Diving.
Their efforts were outstanding in a tough competition against athletes who train every day and have amazing diving facilities.
Riley did well at beating his scores from last year and moving a bit further up the rankings!
