Principal's Update
STAFF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING DAY - Monday 16 August
A reminder, students are not expected at school next Monday as staff have a Professional Learning Day. The day provides students an opportunity to work on homework and assessment tasks. Year 12 Trial exams will continue as scheduled.
FEAST DAY CELEBRATION
On Tuesday, we celebrated the feast of our Patron Saint, St Mary MacKillop of the Cross. It was a fantastic day which began with our annual Feast Day Mass. Thankfully, despite COVID restrictions, we were able to have the whole College community attend Mass, although we were without our Year 12 students who were into their second day of trial exams. We did however pray for our Year 12's as they face an emotionally challenging time during their HSC journey.
Mass was followed by a great whole-school BBQ lunch with Music by our very talented music students and staff to set the celebration vibe.
WHO IS SAINT MARY MACKILLOP OF THE CROSS?
SAINT MARY MACKILLOP'S STORY
If Saint Mary MacKillop were alive today, she would be a household name. It’s not that she sought the limelight. On the contrary, she simply wanted to serve the poor wherever she found them in her native Australia. But along the way, she managed to arouse the ire of some rather powerful churchmen. One even excommunicated her for a time.
Born in Melbourne in 1842, to parents who had emigrated from Scotland, Mary grew up in a family that faced constant financial struggles. As a young woman she was drawn to religious life but could not find an existing order of Sisters that met her needs. In 1860, she met Father Julian Woods, who became her spiritual director. Together they founded a new community of women—the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart, also known as the Josephite Sisters. Its members were to staff schools especially for poor children, as well as orphanages, and do other works of charity.
As the congregation grew, so did Mary MacKillop’s problems. Her priest-friend proved unreliable in many ways and his responsibilities for direction of the Sisters were removed. Meanwhile, Mary had the support of some local bishops as she and her Sisters went about their work. But the bishop in South Australia, aging and relying on others for advice, briefly excommunicated Mary—charging her with disobedience—and dispensed 50 of her Sisters from their vows. In truth, the bishop’s quarrel was about power and who had authority over whom. He ultimately rescinded his order of excommunication.
Mary insisted that her congregation should be governed by an elected mother general answerable to Rome, not to the local bishop. There also were disputes about whether or not the congregation could own property. In the end, Rome proved to be Mary’s best source of support. After a long wait official approval of the congregation—and how it was to be governed—came from Pope Leo XIII.
Despite her struggles with Church authorities, Mary MacKillop and her Sisters were able to offer social services that few, if any, government agencies in Australia could. They served Protestants and Catholics alike. They worked among the aborigines. They taught in schools and orphanages and served unmarried mothers.
Money, actually the lack of it, was a constant worry. But the Sisters who begged from door to door, were bolstered by faith and by the conviction that their struggles were opportunities to grow closer to God.
By the time Mary was approaching the end of her life, the congregation was thriving. She died in 1909 at the age of 67. Pope John Paul II beatified her in 1995. In 2010, when Pope Benedict XVI canonized her, she became Australia’s first saint. Her liturgical feast is celebrated on August 8.
MEET THE EXPERT
Each week throughout the year I will introduce to you some of the expert staff we are so fortunate to have working with your children here at MacKillop College. This week I would like to introduce Jodie Rich.
Name
Jodie Rich.
What subject(s) do you teach?
Religious Education.
What high school did you attend?
Diocesan Catholic Girls High School in Bathurst NSW.
What university did you attend and what course(s) did you do after finishing school?
Straight after receiving my HSC results I marched down to the Centrelink office to change my university preferences. I had been talked into putting nursing as my first choice at university. I faint at the sight of blood and run from needles, so I was so pleased when my results allowed a greater choice of university courses. I enrolled at Charles Sturt University Bathurst and completed a Bachelor in Social Science and a Diploma in Physical Education - a decision I have never regretted due to all the amazing opportunities I have had as a teacher. I later went on to get a Masters in Religious Education at the Australian Catholic University.
What or who inspired you to become a teacher?
My Geography teacher, Ms Galvin. She was a hoot, learning was fun and she was new to teaching geography so we were all learning together. She took the time to teach skills, not just content and took the time to get to know us.
What would be your proudest teaching moment in your career to date?
At the end of each year when my year 12 students say goodbye, I am in awe of their persistence and achievement and I am proud that I have played a small part in their journey. I am so excited that they have their whole life and a world of choices in front of them.
What are you reading at the moment?
Dark Emu by Bruce Pasco. A fascinating book about Aboriginal farming and civilization before European arrival. I am not surprised at the sophisticated farming and aquaculture methods used by our first nation people, because these people are amazing and they know the land, but I am disappointed that Europeans didn't see the potential to learn from the communities.
What quote best describes your approach to teaching?
"Clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience". Colossians 3:12
Favourite non-work related hobbie?
I used to be crafty but now you will mostly probably see me out and about in the wee hours walking, riding or at the gym. My exercise is time for me to clear my head and it's where my most creative planning comes from.
What do you love most about your work?
In my classes, I love seeing students curious and open minded about what they are learning. I love it when they have a go at something without giving up too soon. My character strength is persistence so I love seeing this strength in the students I teach.

VINNIES WINTER APPEAL
As our Vinnies Winter Appeal continues, we have been collecting clothes and on Monday we dropped a large collection of these clothes to the very grateful Vinnies Workers. THANK YOU.
We will finish our Vinnies Winter Appeal with an out of Uniform Day on Friday 20 August. Thanks to parents for ensuring that your child is following the Code of Conduct for OUT OF UNIFORM days (Code of Presentation).
Our theme will be wearing Blue for Vinnies.
HOMELESSNESS WEEK & ST AGNES' PARISH STREET RETREAT
An enthusiastic group of our Year 11 students began their St Agnes' Parish Street Retreat, which coincided with National Homelessness week. There were several activities beginning with a launch night, hearing from LIFELINE, and how they support those who are struggling, and one group on Friday evening assisting at the Port Outreach BBQ.
The students then worked in groups to assist at both the Port Outreach events and the Hastings Homelessness Committee “Travelling Road Shows”, which have served the marginalised in Port Macquarie, Wauchope, Lake Cathie and Laurieton.
Last Wednesday, 4 August the whole group came together for Mass in the MacKillop Chapel to pray for those people who we are serving and to ask God to bless each one of us as we work in this ministry.
We concluded our week with a final evening event in the Chapel at St Joseph’s Regional where students reflected on the work they participated in, the people they served and how they were following Jesus message to “Feed the Hungry”.
Thanks to the organisations who warmly welcomed our students and to the students who volunteered in this important event.
Anyone is invited to donate a COLES gift card to be given to those who are being supported at during this time and beyond– These can be dropped into the school offices or through your child to their PC teacher.
FEAST DAY OF ST MARY MACKILLOP of the CROSS
On Sunday 8 August we celebrated the Feast Day of St Mary MacKillop, the Patron Saint of our school, followed by our Feast Day Mass on Tuesday 10 August. Mary was a wise woman, who imitated Jesus in everything she did. During the Mass students from each Year group carried up a poster that reminds them of the Mary MacKillop quote that they have been focusing on this year.
Year 7: “Be Kind; Be very Kind”
Year 8: “Find Happiness in making others Happy”
Year 9: “We have much for which to be thankful”
Year 10: “How truly wonderful are God’s ways”
Year 11: “Never see a need without doing something about it”
Year 12: “Be Calm and full of Hope”

FEAST DAY
It was great to see Year 7 join in our Feast Day celebrations honouring our College Patron, Saint Mary MacKillop of the Cross. The students showed great reverence and respect during our community celebration of Mass in the College Hall in Mary MacKillop’s memory, with several students helping out with various roles during the celebration. The students were again reminded of our Year 7 theme epitomized through a familiar saying of Mary: “Be kind, be very kind.”
Students continued the community celebration of the day by sharing a hot lunch together in the yard. It was great to see everyone so respectful and kind during both of these celebrations.

A Poem: The Connection
Jesus understood
The loving reach of God
The longing reach of humanity
In his life, in his death
He joined their hands together
(anonymous)
Just as Jesus brought his followers to an intimate relationship with God, we, as disciples in this modern era are missioned to bring Jesus into the lives of the people we encounter. We are to be Jesus in the world. This understanding and commitment is one of the most important learning for the boys and girls of Year 9. It is equally important for us as their parents and teachers.
STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL 2021-2022
Year 9 Students this week nominated peers to the Student Representative Council. Four Student Councillors and four House Captains will be elected. Elections will be held in the coming week.
This year the SRC will commence its duties from the start of Term 4. Students will then hold their leadership role through to the end of Term 3 2022.
SCHOOL DIARY
We have an excellent set up for organising, tracking, and monitoring of student homework and assignments. It is also meant to be one of the first means of communicating with parents in any situations, both good and bad. Yet, for many students the diary is simply not being used.
Student requirements:
- Place diary on desk at the beginning of each lesson;
- List the subjects for each period of each day;
- Write in any homework or assignment against each subject each day; and
- Present diary to parent and PC teacher each week.
Parent requirements:
- Monitor the diary regularly;
- Sign the diary each week; and
- Write in the diary when required for additional communication.
Teacher will:
- Monitor the diary regularly;
- PC teacher to check and sign the diary each week; and
- Write in the diary when required for additional communication.
Any comment written in the diary should be signed by the writer and also the person to whom the note was addressed.
Correct use of the diary will surely add organisation, communication and accountability to the school experience of any young person. I urge all parents to support their educational endeavours through routine use of the school diary.
RECOGNITION OF ACHIEVEMENTS
At MacKillop we encourage students to strive for personal bests. I attempt to give recognition to all forms of student achievement whether academic, sporting, or cultural. Unfortunately, I am not always in a position to know about all the personal achievements of our students. To improve our performance in giving due recognition we need your help. Please advise the school if your son/daughter has achieved something and deserves to be recognised in the newsletter. This can be achieved by either a simple phone call or a note to school.
God bless.

RETREAT
As you are now aware Year 10 will no longer be having their retreat. Year 10 were informed of this as a year group on Friday morning last.
While many were disappointed, they were also very understanding of the situation. I congratulated them on the way they have conducted themselves in the face of more bad news for their school events. The students have not had the ideal run with school activities but they have shown great maturity by their 'just get on with it' attitude.

Year 11 Hospitality
Year 11 Hospitality students are continuing with the work placement program in the St Agnes' Food Services Production Kitchen. This is a mandatory part of the Hospitality course where students experience working in the Hospitality industry and are able to practice skills working alongside qualified chef’s.
Students assisted with the catering for the 260 plus meals per day for the Catholic Care of the Aged patrons. Over the past fortnight, students completed the placement in the school holidays and in compliance with COVID restrictions. Well done!
Thank you to Ken Selway, Food Services Manager for providing our students with such an opportunity. In particular, a huge thank you to the Production Kitchen Chef, Michelle Border for taking students under her wing during the placement. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful collaboration where students can learn directly from experiences in the work place.

Year 11 & 12 Geography
MacKillop College Senior Geography Students Excel in Australian Geography Competition!
Year 11 and 12 Geography students tested their geographical skills and knowledge against students from all around Australia in the 2021 Australian Geography Competition.
We had a significant number of student geographers at our school perform to a very high level in the competition this year. Overall four students achieved high distinctions, seven distinctions and 15 credits.
Over 73 000 students from 727 schools across Australia entered the Australian Geography Competition so the results give us an external benchmark as to how are students are going in certain aspects of geography.
Rachel Honey, the competition’s national coordinator, said; “The competition aims to encourage student interest in geography and to reward student excellence”.
“Geography is an important subject which develops a student’s holistic understanding of the world around them, and their place in it. It helps students appreciate the complex nature of local, regional and global social, economic, and environmental interactions,” said Ms Honey.
Congratulations all of the students who participated in the competition and they are commended on their outstanding results. The award recipients are as follows:

Wellbeing
MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGE: SOCIAL CONNECTIONS
As human beings we need connection. By connection, we mean relationships with others. Having solid and dependable relationships with others is vital to our overall wellbeing. Good connections with others can help our young people learn how to deal with school stress, help them lift low self-esteem and bring on a flood of positive thoughts. When we have strong connections, we tend to feel a strong sense of closeness, trust and belonging to the people who are important to us in our life.
3’s GOOD COMPANY
You don’t need hundreds of friends to feel happy. It’s about quality, not quantity. Psychologists suggest that if you have at least three friends or family members that are REAL connections, then you have a solid foundation to build happiness.
HOW CAN PARENTS/CARERS HELP?
Making new friends, or connections, isn’t easy. Talk to your young person about these tips.
How To Make New Connections
Join a team or club – having something in common with others immediately gives you a shared interest to talk about. It will improve your self confidence in no time.
Listen, ask questions – this shows that you care about what the person is saying and that you are interested in them (everyone wants to be heard!).
Work on your body language - use this easy to remember acronym -
S Face the person squarely
O Open posture, no crossed arms or fidgeting
L Lean towards the person, not too much but just enough to show interest
E Maintain eye contact, without staring
R Be relaxed and don't fidget
Be. You. – changing yourself for someone else will only result in a relationship that is not all that genuine. Be yourself and the rest will follow.
I invite all families to know about The BITE BACK MENTAL HEALTH FITNESS CHALLENGE which your young person can access online for free. It operates on the premise; we need to build up our mental health fitness as we do our physical fitness.
BITE BACK is an online resource for educators created by the Black Dog Institute to engage students in activities that build their mental health fitness. The activities can be completed online or downloaded. These activities are designed to be fun, but they are also research-driven, evidence-based activities to help young people feel better about themselves, build resilience and wellbeing.
Did you watch the Olympics with your children? Are you planning to watch some of the Paralympics with them too?
It's so inspiring for our young people to witness the amazing feats of athleticism these Olympians can complete.
But what we almost never see, however, are the athletes who don’t make it to the medal podium.
You know the ones who trained for many years to make it to the Olympics...only to fall off the balance beam or miss their dive.
What about these athletes? Are they failures?
Actually, they are great examples of perseverance in the face of HUGE disappointment (many of these athletes come back to compete again and again).
You can point to these athletes to help remind your child that mistakes (and even embarrassments) don’t have to stop them.
When your child experiences disappointment or a failure, use these Olympic examples to keep them focused on growing and learning, not just on the outcome.
Point out that even the most skilled athletes in the world sometimes fail or make mistakes. They learn from their mistakes and come back stronger next time.
You can say:
“Even when we give something with all our effort, we might fail or make a mistake. What's important is to learn from our mistakes and come back stronger to try again. Success takes time, even for the most skilled athletes in the world."
Want more Olympic examples to help illustrate a growth mindset in real life? See the Olympics Growth Mindset Discussion Guide.

FEAST DAY
The MacKillop College music community has been busy this week, providing music for Youth Mass on Sunday 8 August, at St Agnes' Church to celebrate the Feast Day of St Mary MacKillop and again on Tuesday 10 August, as part of our college Feast Day celebrations.
The Collective Praise Band consisting of students from Years 7 to 11, provided music for our College Mass in the hall on Tuesday morning. Some creative placing of ensemble members enabled the band to function as normal whilst adhering to current COVID restrictions by placing singers outdoors and instrumentalists spaced apart.
In addition, the junior band, senior band and saxophone ensemble performed outdoors in the COLA on the junior campus during lunch 2, to add to the festive atmosphere of the day. With so many cancelled events and restrictions in place students were grateful to be able to perform to an audience and contribute to feast day activities at the college.
Well done to all students involved and thank you for your continued commitment to Co-Curricular Music Ensembles here at MacKillop during such trying times!
SAPSS DRUM LINE
The SAPSS Drum Line will resume rehearsals in Week 6 in the College Hall on Wednesday from 3:30pm - 5:30pm. The colour guard is NOT required at this point. Please contact the ensemble director Mark Spence with any questions regarding rehearsals for the remainder of the term.

YEAR 8 NETBALL DRAWS A CROWD
Over the past four weeks, our Year 7/8 Boys and Girls Netball teams have continued their training. As there is no competition to be played at the moment due to COVID the teams have played two friendly games against each other.
The skill on show between both teams has provided great entertainment during their two lunch time encounters. The girls only won by 1 point in the first game. The boys came out firing on all cylinders in the second match determined to win. They made a great start but footwork proved a bit of an issue turning over possession allowing the girls to take the win again.
The crowd certainly enjoyed watching the skill and talent in both teams. Thank you to Amy Ryals and Brooke Higham for coaching the teams and to Brianna Moloney and Lara Inman for umpiring the match.
