Principal's Update
ASH WEDNESDAY
On Wednesday we celebrated our Ash Wednesday Prayer Service. Whilst 2021 was a little different to the other Ash Wednesdays, with no Ashes being given on our foreheads, the message still rang true. In his daily gospel reflection our Parish Priest Fr Paul says;
Ash Wednesday is one of the most important Holy Days in our liturgical calendar.
It opens for us our season of Lent, a season of fasting, prayer and alms giving,
as is mentioned in the Gospel.
Our season of Lent is always a season of preparation, which is signified by the
change to the colour purple. Purple is our ‘get ready’ colour, our colour of
preparation. We use it for this season of Lent and for the season of Advent
when we prepare ourselves for the birth of Jesus.
Our practice of using Ash in our ceremony comes from the Ancient Jewish
tradition of penance and fasting. As we have long experienced, there is the
practice of wearing ashes on our heads. The ashes symbolise the dust from
which God made us.
The ashes also symbolise for us grief. In this case, grief that we have
sinned and caused division from God. He explains that the ashes we have each
year are made from the blessed Palms used in previous Palm Sunday Masses
over the years.
Today, we enter into this new season (the green of Ordinary Time is gone) and
Fr Paul invites us to spend this time of preparation repairing our relationship
with God; trying to come back to God, to acknowledge our sins, and to seek
healing and help from Jesus.
During the 40 days of Lent, ask yourself:
- To whom can I give? (Almsgiving)
- To grow, what do I need to give up? (Fasting)
- With what do I need God's help? (Prayer)
SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Year 11 and 12 were able to have a fantastic day at the pool on Wednesday following their Ash Wednesday Prayer Service. Great House spirit and participation was shown by all and what impressed me greatly was the support and cheering for their friends and peers. The carnival is a great release from the pressures of senior high school and an extra special one for our Year 12 students as they start to tick off their ‘last ever’ events throughout their final year of schooling.
Unfortunately Thursday’s Year 7-10 carnival was cancelled due to a forecast late Wednesday for 50ml of rain between 9.00am and 5.00pm. We did however continue to run our competitors only carnival so as to allow students to trial for the upcoming Diocesan Carnival. Congratulations to those students who have made the MacKillop Team. It is our hope that we may be able to run a House Cup Carnival later in Term 1, or in Term 4, to make up for the missed event.
My sincere thanks to all staff who made these events possible and to run so smoothly, with special thanks to our Leader of Sport Mrs Erin Denham and Sport Trainee Brooke Higham for your coordination and leadership.

MacKillop College is proud to be offering a very successful program called Seasons for Growth.
Seasons for Growth aims to strengthen the social and emotional wellbeing of young people who are dealing with significant life changes by helping them learn they are not alone in their experience of change, loss and grief, and are able to build their communication, decision making and problem solving skills within the context of a safe and supportive peer group learning environment.
Who is it for?
Anyone who is living with the effects of change and loss through:
- the loss of someone or something you love;
- separation of parents and families;
- moving to a new place;
- impact of illness;
- family work-life changes; or
- changes in friendship groups.
If you would like more information, or feel that your child would benefit from Seasons for Growth, we would encourage you to talk to him/her about participating in the program and complete the following form.

CODE OF PRESENTATION (AMENDMENT)
As many parents are aware we are currently going through a process of reviewing a number of our codes and policies. Late last year we updated our Code of Presentation and shared it with parents and students, both in the newsletter and the 2021 College Diary. Unfortunately one of the agreed changes had been missed in the update and hence I have included the most recent version here in the newsletter.
The change is “boys are permitted to have their shirts out during recess and lunch’’. It is our expectation that the shirt is tucked in at all other times including before and after school.
I apologise to staff who have been doing the right thing and implementing the policy as first published. I acknowledge this caused some challenging situations and conflict due to the confusion. I am hopeful that with renewed clarity students can ensure they are wearing the College uniform as expected and with pride.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for assisting the College in the implementation of the Code and for ensuring your child has the correct items of uniform. I understand this is an issue with sports socks and shorts supply at our uniform store and am hopeful this will be rectified quickly.
CANTEEN
With increased student numbers our College canteen is in need of some more parent/carer/grandparent helpers. If you can help please contact Mrs Belinda Hadfield at the College or fill in the google form below.
QKR! CANTEEN APP
Students and families are also encouraged to download the QKR! APP and to order food in advance so as to limit waiting times. Please encourage your child to order before they come to school.

ASH WEDNESDAY
On Wednesday 17th of February, MacKillop College celebrated the beginning of the Lenten Season with a Prayer Service for Ash Wednesday. We held three services lead by our very enthusiastic Year 9 and 10 Youth Ministry Classes.
The student leaders reminded the students about the Pillars of Lent – PRAYER, FASTING & ALMSGIVING.
For Christians, prayer is a time of talking to God. I might be asking for help or thanking God for his goodness. Through prayer we come closer to God so that we are better able to realise our baptismal promise to live justly as Jesus teaches us.
For Christians fasting means going without something, as a form of prayer. Each time the person goes without, they are encouraged to think of others who are not as fortunate as they are. Fasting joins us in solidarity with people experiencing poverty who often have no choice but to go without the basic human needs.
Sharing what we have, or ‘almsgiving’, is a sign of our commitment to justice and our thanks for all that God has given us. During Lent our school has committed to ‘Almsgive’ to Project Compassion.
Due to COVID restrictions we were unable to use the Ashes as a public expression of our faith and repentance. Instead, our Year 11 students placed rocks at the base of the Cross as a sign of releasing the weight of our Sin and trying to be more like Jesus.
The Junior students were given a purple ribbon to pin on as a REMINDER that LENT is a time of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving.
Thanks to the great job done by our amazing Year 9 and 10 Youth Ministry Classes and our hard working YMO’s.

INTRODUCING OUR YOUTH MINISTRY OFFICERS (YMO’s)
This year we have two new YMO’s, Juliet and Ella who are excited to be helping out in the spiritual aspect of our MacKillop College life.

JULIET EYLES
My Name is Juliet Eyles (Jules) and I am a Youth Ministry Officer at MacKillop College for 2021, alongside my YMO partner Ella. This year Ella and I will be spiritual and practical support for the religion staff and all of the students of MacKillop College.
I was a YMO last year at Xavier College, Ballina so this is my second year as a YMO. I decided to become a part of the St Agnes Parish, in particular a part of MacKillop College, because of the many wonderful things I have heard about this school and parish community.
I am excited to get to know the students in classes and at lunch and help them feel welcome to the catholic faith.
ELLA IPPAVIZ
I’m Ella Ippaviz and I am one of the Youth Ministry Officers (YMOs) at MacKillop College for 2021!
I graduated from St Joseph’s Regional College in 2020 and I feel very blessed to have been given the opportunity to work here at MacKillop. I am very keen to work alongside our College and St Agnes' Parish youth to empower and encourage the students to not only delve deeper into their faith and personal relationship with God, but to also empower them to be confident within themselves and all their amazing gifts.
My vision for this year is to help to create a large student community filled with student discipleship, to help them engage in programs and activities we offer such as Festa Christi, Shine, Ignite and so many more, which are designed to strengthen their faith through discipleship and social justice!
YMO EQUIPPING SCHOOL
In Week 2 all the YMO’s from our Lismore diocese met in Lismore and spent five very busy days spending time in prayer, developing skills, getting to know each other. I enjoyed getting to spend one of the days with these enthusiastic and faith fill young Leaders.

Student Wellbeing and Voice
PULSE SUBSCRIPTION 2021
Student wellbeing is an important factor in improving student outcomes and in achieving our pastoral goal of enabling all students to thrive.
In the later half of 2020 all students participated in a trial to acknowledge, track and share their voice on an array of questions connected to student wellbeing and engagement at school. The platform used in this trial was PULSE; a weekly real-time check-in that provides data for the school to respond to and assists students in developing their emotional intelligence by recognising how they are feeling and asking for assistance when needed.
Students answer one ‘big question’ question each week (How are you feeling this week?), five randomly selected questions that contribute to school-wide data and have an opportunity to express gratitude by sending a message to another student or a teacher. School-wide data is collected in the following areas:
- Attitude to Learning
- Feelings of Being Valued and Safe
- Health
- Participation
- Sense of Identity and Culture
- Material Basics
Individual students who respond to the ‘big question’ with I need some help will be contacted by their Leader of Pastoral Care to chat about their concerns and the support they may need. The Pastoral Team will respond to trends identified in the school wide data e.g. promote areas of school involvement when student participation is low; offer mindfulness opportunities when stress is high.
Following this trial MacKillop committed to using PULSE through 2021. The subscription cost for this online platform is $10.00 per student for the year – this will provide 40 real time check-ins. This cost has been billed to Term 1 fee statements.
Students will be asked to Check your Pulse every Monday morning in PC. I encourage parents and carers to ask their child/ren about the Pulse check-in and also discuss the importance of wellbeing, recognising your emotional state and the need to reach out when support is needed.
If you have any questions about Pulse, you are most welcome to contact me.

Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories. Please note that MacKillop College does not keep any Vaccination records.
Year 7
PC LUNCH
During our Year 7 trivia activity earlier in the year, one PC ruled the competition and were victorious in their general knowledge. Well done again to 7 Macquarie 2 who were the champions on the day! This week they were able to once again celebrate their team effort and enjoyed a hot chip lunch together with their PC teacher, Mr David Kennedy. There were smiles and full tummies all around!

UPCOMING EVENTS
As you aware, Year 7 will be spending a community day together on Tuesday, 23rd February at Stoney Aqua Park. We are all looking forward to a great day getting to forge new relationships in our Pastoral Care class with friends and teachers. There will be PC challenges to encourage team building and problem solving, as well as plenty of opportunity for free play with friends across the year group.
A reminder that it is a compulsory day of attendance, and students are to wear sport uniform with their swimming outfit under their uniform. As with all water activities, students are required to wear a rash shirt and shorts to enter the water – see the diary for further details. While the canteen will be available, students are strongly encouraged to bring their lunch, snacks and water bottle with them. A towel, hat, sunscreen and bag for wet items is also recommended.

Year 8
STONEY AQUA PARK
We are all looking look forward to our community building day next Wednesday, 24th February, when we head to Stoney Aqua Park. Remember to bring rash shirts and shorts, as well as sunscreen, food and water to stay hydrated and protect our skin from the elements.
SCIENCE PRACTICAL LESSONS
Year 8 has been having fun exploring muscle fatigue, among other topics. See if you can spot your science student amongst the pics!

BRAINSTORM PRODUCTIONS - CYBERIA
Following on from last week’s talk “Safe on Social”, next week Year 8 students experience the renowned Brainstorm Production, Cyberia.
Date: Friday, 26th February 2021.
Venue: Lochinvar Centre.
Rationale: This production is linked with the PDHPE curriculum and students will study the content throughout Terms 2 and 3.
Cost: $7 per student (included in Term 1 Subject costs).
Dress: Students are asked to wear Sports uniform on this day as they will be sitting on the floor during the production.
Time: 11.20am-12.35pm. Students will attend normal scheduled classes for the remainder of the day and must ensure they have the correct equipment for those lessons.
This engaging online safety and mental health program for high school students uses live theatre to encourage positive relationships and help-seeking. Ruby loses her moral compass online. Anxious and struggling with impulse control, she is in danger of ruining her digital reputation. She is instantly banished to Cyberia. Tim is in self-imposed exile. A lack of sleep and social interaction leads to mistakes, scams and misunderstandings online. He becomes isolated and withdraws into gaming. Tim and Ruby must find their way back to retrieve their dignity, privacy and relationships.
An interesting conversation to have with your teenager next week. Did they relate to either character? What areas rang true? Can your teenager see a practical application in their own lives?
Please note: Year 8 Family Get Together Breakfast - cancelled due to COVID restrictions
CODE OF PRESENTATION
This week we continue to check uniforms. We thank those who are wearing it with pride and challenge those who continue to breach the College Code of Presentation. Although the majority of students show the utmost respect for the College, a handful of girls continue to roll skirts, and sport shorts, and wear additional jewellery. It is a continual challenge to encourage the tucking in of the boys’ shirts, however, it has been clarified that shirts do not need to be tucked during recess or lunch. As the school year progresses, we again thank parents, caregivers and students for adhering to the door to door policy of presentation.
UPDATE
Students in Mr Reynolds’ Year 7 classes at the end of last year did not receive a complete School Report.
These Reports have now been completed and uploaded to Schoolworx and you may access same through the Parent Portal.
REMINDER FOR ALL
Have you had your diary signed for the week? This is a vital way teachers communicate with home. Please put a reminder in your phone, or on the calendar to assist your student as they find a rhythm in their school year.

Year 9

Our focus for 2021 is commitment.
The junior campus of MacKillop College was previously named after Saint Paul. A man whose Zeal and commitment serve as a leading example to all Christians. After Jesus, there is more written by and about Paul in the New Testament than any other figure. His letters contain advice to the communities of his time, encouraging them in ways to live better according to the teaching of Jesus. His thoughts and advice are equally relevant and helpful for us in the 21st Century. Paul’s letter to the Romans is a great example of the ideals and attitudes we hope to impart upon Year 9 and all people involved with the college.
Do not let your love be a sham, but be sincere in choosing good rather than evil.
Have warm affection for one another as Christian brothers and sisters.
Be committed and cheerful as you work for the Lord, being happy and cheerful as you place your trust in him.
Live in God’s presence and keep on praying.
When difficulties arise be patient.
Set out to welcome others and be generous to those in need.
Don’t curse others, bless them, even when they have not been good to you.
Do all you can to live in peace with everyone.
Support and encourage others by rejoicing with those who are happy and sharing the sadness of those who are in sorrow.
Never look down at another person, but always be positive in your attitude to others.
Be as concerned for those who can do nothing for you in return as for those who are very close to you.
Break the cycle of evil – conquer it with goodness.
(Romans 12:9-18, 21)
Living this commitment is a massive and life directing undertaking.
UPDATE
Students in Mr Reynolds’ 8 Tech Skills, 8 Timber and 8 Digital Tech at the end of last year did not receive a complete School Report.
These Reports have now been completed and uploaded to Schoolworx and you may access same through the Parent Portal.
God bless.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL
This week we enjoyed the first taste of the Senior Swimming Carnival. I was very impressed with Year 11 students attitude to be involved and be a part of this great experience. It was a great day had by all.

HEALTH OF YOUNG AUSTRALIANS
In Year 11 PDHPE this week we have been discussing the health of young Australians. After some research and data analysis, we have come to the conclusion that young Australians are doing a great job in many areas of their health. For example, smoking and drinking rates are down compared to older generations at the same age. One area of health concern however is that of mental health and our MacKillop students readily agree with the studies than link the rise in poor mental health to social media. Many students admitted that they feel a little addicted to their mobile phones and each of them tends to have an app that sucks away much of their time.
I recently watched the Netflix documentary called “The Social Dilemma” and I encourage all of Year 11 and their parents to watch this program, together preferably. Despite being quite widely read on this topic; it was still eye opening for me. I would always suggest we watch such programs with a critical mind and viewing it like this, I believe, would be a great way to help young people understand a little more about how and why their favourite app was created and that the addictive nature is in fact a design feature. It is this kind of knowledge that may help them to make informed decisions about the time they spend on their phones and understand a little more as to why they might find themselves whiling away great chunks of their time on their device. Hopefully this will arm them with the tools to make smarter decisions about their social media.
HEALTH INITIATIVES TO SUPPORT MENTAL HEALTH
At the senior site we have implemented a couple of Health Promotion initiatives over the past few years to help support our young people. One of the privileges students experience on the senior site is to be able to have their mobile phones with them in the playground. As a way of encouraging them to exercise self-control, we have implemented Physical Phone Free Friday! Students are expected to leave their phones at home or at the least leave them in their bags for the day. They are also welcome to wear their sport uniform on Friday’s, with Lisa Kable (Year 12 Leader of Pastoral Care) and myself making sure there are plenty of physical activities for them to participate in during both lunch breaks. Both these initiatives are designed to increase their activity levels and support their mental health and wellbeing.
UNIFORM AND PRIDE
Year 11 are doing a great job as leaders of the school in terms of their uniform. They are wearing it well and with pride. I believe pride is a key factor in the Code of Presentation. I strongly believe that our students should feel proud when they wear our uniform. They belong to a great school where they are surrounded by people who support them and who work hard every day to give them the best opportunities for a bright future. In Year 11 the uniform also represents a personal choice they have made in continuing their education at MacKillop College. Not an easy choice, a choice with challenges, with high expectations and with plenty of work ahead. Making that choice is something to be proud of!
Thank you to all the students who continue to wear our uniform so well!

SRC Action
Our SRC’s first initiative was to extend a little kindness to our student community in a Valentine’s Day gesture. Love is a character strength and values close relationships, especially where sharing and caring is reciprocated and being close to people in one's life. Jesus commanded us to “love one another as I have loved you”; we are thus called to love God and other people who are in our lives, when we let others “in” we too can be loved. See the positivity captured in the photos below to demonstrate the benefits of a small act of kindness.
#we Accept All

Wellbeing
MacKillop College utilises a strengths-based approach; seeing the strengths and capacities of each person and looking for opportunities to support and use the person’s existing strengths to help them develop and learn.
We use the common language of character strengths in our discourse when helping students learn about themselves, others and their subject areas.
In Term 1 our focus is on the character strength - Curiosity

What is the nature of this character strength?
To be curious is to explore and discover, to take an interest in ongoing experience for its own sake. Curiosity is often described as novelty-seeking and being open to experience, and it’s associated with the natural desire to build knowledge. It is fulfilling to journey toward an answer, to engage in a new experience, or to learn a new fact. To go to a new restaurant, visit a new city, meet a new person in your class, or to conduct an online search for a question can each fulfil your quest for new experiences and new information.
There are two key components to curious individuals: they are interested in exploring new ideas, activities and experiences, and they also have a strong desire to increase their own personal knowledge.
Why focus on curiosity?
- We want our students to be curious about themselves - to be involved in situations where they gain new experiences.
- We want our students to be curious about others - to know and value each other so they can build and strengthen positive relationships.
- AND we want students to be curious about learning - to engage in lessons and experience success.
Research findings on the benefits of curiosity found that curiosity is one of the five strengths most reliably linked to satisfaction with life - it is a crucial element in thriving as a person and as a learner at school.

Science News
Thursday, 11th February was International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
To celebrate the great accomplishments of women, our awesome female Science teachers held a lunch. They spoke about birthing a calf, electrocuting earthworms, catching deep sea creatures and frilled neck lizards, wading through exotic waterways, teaching kids in the Solomon Islands and textiles chemistry, among other stories.
We hope that some of our female students have been inspired by these interesting stories.
Thanks to Mrs Alexa Harvey, Mrs Stephanie Connor, Miss Stephanie Wong, Mrs Jo Pilgrim, Mrs Mandy Palin and Ms Rachel Clark.

BIG BATTERY BLITZ
MacKillop College has joined in the Big Battery Blitz campaign to increase the rate of battery recycling in our region. Orange battery recycling boxes are being sent home with all Year 7 and 8 students. Alongside your yellow and green bins, these will encourage families to separate the recyclable components of our household waste.
For the next 3 weeks, we would like all families to send in any dead batteries to school where they will be collected and counted for the House Points competition. Please watch the safety video below. After 3 weeks, we hope that families continue to collect and recycle batteries at either the Council Waste Transfer Facility or Battery World.

COMMUNITY SPORT
RUN LIKE THE WIND
Congratulations to both Ryan Binksin and Jett Hanson who have both been recently recognised for their outstanding running ability. These boys continue to train hard and keep breaking their own PB’s.
Jett has set a new record for the 1500m twice in the one month at the Port Macquarie Little Athletics Club.
Ryan recently competed in the NSW 5km Championships and ran an incredible 15min 16seconds to be the fastest Under 18 in the state in the B Men’s Final. This time is phenomenal – it is not too often we have school students clocking 3 minute kms!
Ryan and Jett we are extremely proud of your recent results and look forward to seeing you chase more of your running goals throughout the year.

FOOTBALL FEVER
Congratulations to the following students who are representing Football MNC in the National Football Premier League. This is a huge commitment, congratulations to Ashley Bell, Zora Boskovski, Jarvis Lineham (Reserve), Daniel Mercer, and Jamie Merrick.
OZTAG STATE CUP
Four of our MacKillop students competed in the NSW Oztag State Cup for the Port Macquarie Sharks. The girls won 5 out of 6 round games before qualifying for the finals. The team played with skill and teamwork to make it through to the grand finals where they were narrowly defeated by Sutherland 3:2. To be silver medalists in their first State Cup is an outstanding achievement. Congratulations to Charlee Bailey, Jenna Bryan, Sehtaya Gordon and Milla Swain.
If your child has achieved outstanding sporting results in their community sport, we would love to hear about it. Please email myself, or your child’s respective Leader of Pastoral Care, so we can acknowledge these achievements.
If you have any questions regarding sport at MacKillop College, please do not hesitate to contact me either by email or phone at the College.
