Principal's Update

Tell Them from Me
Our recent Tell Them From Me data indicates that over the previous 12 months, students have shown a 5% decrease in screen time use. This is a wonderful trend and supports the increased need for our young people to spend more time outdoors, communicating with family, and interacting more with peers. A recent change in college policy around the use of mobile phones has supported this trend. It is great walking around the college during break times and witnessing students interacting on a more personal level.
Maggie Dent
Last week, I highlighted some key times to avoid when communicating effectively with your teenager. It would seem, when looking at that list, that the communication window would be almost non-existent. Once we have identified the best time to have those more difficult conversations, I thought I would highlight a few communication strategies this week.
- Mindset Shift - Communicate with teens as you would with a respected colleague or good friend. We often use the same communication style with teens as we did when they were younger.
- Active Listening - Listen more than you speak, showing genuine interest in their perspective.
- Ask, don’t assume - Instead of jumping in with advice or conclusions, ask open-ended questions to understand what they’re really thinking or feeling. It shows respect, invites conversation, and helps them feel heard not managed. Use open-ended statements like:
- That's interesting. Tell me more.
- Wow. Then what happened?
- Say that again. I want to understand what you're getting at.
- What do you think needs to happen now?
- What's your plan?
- That sounds tricky. Let me know if you need help or ideas for that.
Learning Conversations
Week 7 Learning Conversations will take place in the college hall, beginning at 2.00pm on Monday September 1, and concluding at 5.30pm.
Staff Professional Learning Day
A reminder to families that next Monday, 1 September (Week 7) will be a pupil-free day as staff engage in Professional Learning. Staff will refine their work on behaviour and student engagement while also working through our new LEARN pedagogical framework, to be implemented across the college in 2026. The LEARN framework closely aligns with the work done by Barak Rosenshine and his 10 principles of instruction, whilst the learning around behaviour is connected to Paul Dix and his book “When the Adults Change, Everything Changes”.

Leaders of Wellbeing: Stage 4
As we move into the heart of the academic year, our Stage 4 students are continuing to grow in confidence, curiosity, and independence. This term offers rich opportunities for deep learning, collaborative enquiry, and personal development across all subject areas.
In Year 7, students are settling into high school life with increasing maturity, exploring new concepts, and building foundational skills that will support them throughout their secondary journey. Year 8 students are beginning to take greater ownership of their learning, engaging in more complex tasks and reflecting on their progress with growing insight.
Year 8 Elective Selection for Year 9 2026
As our Year 8 students prepare to transition into Stage 5, they are now invited to begin selecting their elective subjects for Year 9 in 2026. This is an important step in shaping their learning journey, and we encourage families to engage in conversations around interests, strengths, and future aspirations.
Following a recent student briefing, all Year 8 students have been emailed two key resources to support their decision-making: the Year 9 2026 Elective Booklet and the Elective Presentation. We recommend reviewing these materials together over the coming week, ahead of the online selection portal opening on Tuesday, 2 September, at 7.00pm. The portal will close on Friday, 5 September, at 3.00pm.
Students will receive a unique user code via email on Friday, 29 August, which will allow them to log in and submit their preferences. The system provides an option to email a copy of selections for personal records. Please note that while every effort is made to accommodate student choices, final placements are subject to class sizes and room availability. Not all students will receive their first preference, and some may be offered their third or fourth choice. Selections are processed on a “first in” basis, and confirmation will be provided at a later date.
If your child does not receive their user code or if you have any questions about the process, please contact the Learning and Teaching team at pmac-learningandteaching@lism.catholic.edu.au.
We look forward to supporting our students as they take this exciting next step in their educational journey.
Year 7 Elective Selection for Year 8 2026
Our Year 7 students are now beginning the exciting process of selecting their elective subjects for Year 8 in 2026. This marks an important step in their learning journey, offering opportunities to explore areas of interest and build confidence in decision-making.
To support this process, students have been emailed two key resources: the Year 8 2026 Elective Information and the Elective Presentation. We encourage families to review these materials together and discuss preferences ahead of the online selection portal opening on Wednesday, 3 September, at 7.00pm. The portal will close on Monday, 8 September, at 3.00pm.
Each student will receive a unique user code via email on Friday, 29 August, which will allow them to log in and submit their elective choices. The system provides an option to email a copy of selections for personal records. While every effort is made to accommodate student preferences, final placements are subject to class sizes and room availability. As such, not all students will receive their first choice, and some may be offered their third or fourth option. Selections are processed on a “first in” basis, and confirmation will be provided at a later date.
If your child does not receive their user code or you have any questions about the process, please contact the Learning and Teaching team at pmac-learningandteaching@lism.catholic.edu.au.
We look forward to supporting our students as they take this exciting next step in their educational journey.
Uniform and Presentation Expectations – Makeup Reminder
We’d like to remind families of our shared commitment to upholding MacKillop’s Code of Presentation, which reflects the values of pride, respect, and readiness for learning. Recently, we’ve noticed an increase in students wearing makeup, particularly mascara and false eyelashes, which does not align with our uniform expectations. All students have been reminded that wearing makeup constitutes a uniform breach, which is recorded on Compass. As per school policy, three breaches will result in a Wednesday afternoon detention.
We ask for your continued support in reinforcing these expectations at home. Please encourage your child to avoid the risk of wearing makeup to school, and help us maintain a consistent and respectful learning environment for all. Your partnership in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Anti-Bullying Week – Standing Up for What’s Right
Anti-Bullying Week was a powerful and positive moment in our school calendar, with students across all year levels engaging in meaningful conversations about respect, inclusion, and the importance of standing up for one another. As part of our commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment, students completed a confidential anti-bullying survey designed to help us identify areas of concern, offer targeted support, and implement preventative strategies. The insights gathered will guide our ongoing efforts to ensure bullying has no place in our school community.
We continue to remind students of the importance of being an upstander, not a bystander someone who speaks out, supports others, and helps create a culture of kindness and accountability. Whether through words or actions, standing up for what is right makes a real difference. Thank you to all families for reinforcing these values at home and helping us build a school where every student feels safe, seen, and supported.
Year 8 Camp: Trial Bay Adventure Ahead!
We are thrilled to announce that the Year 8 camp will take place in Week 4 of Term 4, from Monday, 3 November, to Thursday, 6 November 2025, at the stunning Trial Bay in South West Rocks. This exciting outdoor experience offers students a chance to build resilience, strengthen friendships, and enjoy the natural beauty of our coastline all while developing key skills in teamwork and independence.
To help with planning, students are now encouraged to begin submitting their tent groups to Mr. McRae and Mrs. Ryan. Tent groups can include up to four students, though smaller groups or individual swags are also welcome. In preparation for the camp, students will begin their PDHPE camp unit in Week 7, where they’ll explore safety, leadership, and outdoor education themes.
We look forward to a memorable and enriching experience for all involved!

Leaders of Wellbeing: Stage 5
Motivation, Engagement, and the ‘Middle Years Slump’
The middle years of high school, Years 9 and 10, are a time of growth, exploration, and increasing independence. While this stage can sometimes come with a dip in motivation or engagement, often called the “Middle Years Slump,” it’s also a wonderful opportunity for students to develop strong study habits, discover their interests, and build confidence.
As a parent or carer, you play a crucial role in helping your child navigate these years with purpose and positivity.
Supporting Your Child’s Motivation and Confidence
Many young people during this stage:
- begin to question the relevance of what they’re learning;
- feel uncertain about their abilities as expectations increase; and
- are still learning how to balance social, academic, and personal demands.
With your guidance and encouragement, these challenges can become turning points that build resilience, independence, and a stronger sense of self.
How You Can Make a Big Difference
Here are some ways you can support your child’s motivation and engagement at home:
- Celebrate Effort, Not Just Results: Focus on the progress they’re making big or small. Recognising effort, persistence, and improvement builds their confidence and encourages a love of learning.
- Make Learning Meaningful: Talk to your child about how what they’re learning connects to real life whether it’s understanding the news, managing money, solving problems, or exploring future careers. Help them see the “why” behind the “what.”
- Encourage Healthy Study Habits: Support your child to develop simple routines dedicated study time, regular breaks, and time to recharge. Consistency helps reduce stress and builds a sense of achievement.
- Stay Connected with Teachers: If you notice your child is feeling overwhelmed or disengaged, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher or leader of learning.

Year 12
Basketball Achievement
We’re thrilled to share that Lucas Scott was awarded Rookie of the Year over the weekend and named to the All-Star Five Guard for the Waratah 2 Under 23 Youth League, a remarkable recognition among 24 teams and more than 240 players across the competition.
What makes this achievement even more impressive is that Lucas, at just 17 years old, earned these honours in his very first year in both junior and men's leagues, competing against athletes as old as 22. His dedication, talent, and composure on the court have set him apart, and this is only the beginning.
Congratulations, Lucas!

Attendance
As we approach the final stretch of the academic year, I want to emphasise the critical importance of attendance for our Year 12 students. This is a pivotal time, and every day in class counts towards your success both as individuals and as a collective year group.
Your presence in school is more than just showing up; it’s about being part of a supportive community that thrives when we all commit to being there. Consistent attendance ensures you stay on top of your learning, engage with teachers, and benefit from the collaborative energy of your peers. As a year group, your strength lies in unity. When you pull each other up, encouraging one another to attend, participate, and stay focused, you create a ripple effect that lifts everyone.
Students - check in with your mates, motivate each other, and commit to being present. If someone’s struggling to get to school, lend a hand whether it’s a quick message of encouragement or a study group to keep them connected.
Parents, your support is vital. Encourage your child to attend every day, ready to engage, and remind them that their presence matters not just for themselves but for their peers. If you have concerns about attendance or well-being, please reach out to me directly so we can work together to keep your child on track.
Let’s finish Year 12 as a united, thriving year group!
End of Year Activities
We’re thrilled about the exciting events planned for the Year 12 Class of 2025 to celebrate their achievements and mark the end of this significant chapter. Preparations for the Celebration of Excellence and other end-of-year activities have been underway for some time, ensuring a memorable experience. This also includes a fun-filled beach day at Pilot Beach, a year group banquet lunch, hand painting, and various other activities designed to bring the year group together in celebration. Stay tuned for more details as a Compass event and further information will be shared soon. Keep an eye out for updates, and get ready to celebrate the Class of 2025!

Junior and Intermediate Diocesan Basketball Championships 7 & 8 Girls
What a great two days with these energetic and enthusiastic young sportswomen!
The team included Millie Andrew, Scarlett Brook, Isla Garel, Sienna Harrison, Trinity McIlroy, Keira Moore, Chloe Moye, Milly Osborne, Momiji Ryan, and Madilyn Tinley.
We played three strong games on Tuesday, winning against Xavier, Woodlawn, and Murwillumbah. On day two, we won against Trinity Lismore but lost in the final to Coffs Harbour St John Paul College, a powerful team.
The girls showed great sportsmanship and encouraged each other on and off the court. I was proud of how they supported each other and adapted their play throughout the games.
MVP: Chloe Moye
Coach: Mrs Amy Ryals

9/10 Girls Basketball
The Year 9/10 Girls Basketball team showed strongly at the Diocesan Championships in Port Macquarie. They started well with wins against St Mary’s Catholic College Casino and St John’s College Woodlawn on day one.
On day two, the team faced a tough loss to Xavier Catholic College, Ballina, placing them second in the pool. This set up a semi-final against St John Paul College, Coffs Harbour. In a tight game, the girls played strongly and won to reach the final, a rematch against Xavier College, Ballina.
In another tough match, the team fell to a tall and physical Xavier side in the final.
Congratulations to the team on a great effort and finishing as Diocesan Runners Up.
Team: Grace Collins, Mikayla Adams, Amber McIlroy, Ellah Armitage, Charlotte McEntyre, Mia Zvirzdinas, Evie Bullen, Abby Maloney.
MVP: Grace Collins
Coach: Ryan Adams

9 and 10 Girls – Gold Basketball
The Year 9/10 Girls Basketball team had a fantastic two days of competition, playing three challenging round games. The girls showed determination, energy, and a commitment to improving with every game.
Their hard work paid off in the final game, where they came together as a team and finished the competition with a well-deserved win.
It was an excellent effort, and the improvement shown over the two days is a credit to the girls’ persistence and positive attitude.
Players: Lily Rowlatt, Sierra Westbrook, Riley Dailey, Ziva Balkin, Isabelle Hawkins, Darcie Gleeson, Eliana Wheate
MVP: Lily Rowlatt
Coach: Anna Gleeson

9 and 10 Boys Basketball
The 9/10 Intermediate Boys Basketball Team played a fantastic tournament, finishing undefeated and bringing home the gold. Their dedication to training and commitment to the team showed throughout the competition.
They won their semi-final against Regional on Day Two before facing Coffs Harbour in the Grand Final. In a gritty match, they came back from six points down to win by three and held the lead for the rest of the game.
MVP: Maddyx Gray for his effort, commitment, and support as a valuable player and tireless referee.
Coach: Mitchell Buchtmann

Bill Turner Boys – Round 6
2025 has been a successful year for our Bill Turner Boys team. Despite setbacks and postponements, we fielded a strong side and played some good football. Mrs Denham, Anna, and Lucy worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep us organised, and the team and I are very grateful.
The Regional Final was a big occasion, and we aimed to progress further in the competition. However, we faced a strong St John Paul College team and fell short. Early setbacks, including losing our captain and midfield energy within the first 15 minutes and being 2-0 down at halftime, made the challenge difficult.
Instead of playing defensively, the team was encouraged to keep attacking, which left us open at the back in an attempt to make something happen. Despite the effort, we lost by a significant margin.
Thanks to long-standing players moving on to other representative teams: Lucas Merrick, Diarmuid Barltrop, Oto Ryan, Jake Riches, Locke Williamson, and Aiden Myles. This opens opportunities for Year 7 and 8 students to trial for the 2026 side as we continue building a strong team.
Coach: Tom Salter
Inclusive School Futsal Titles
On Wednesday, 30 July, a group of MacKillop students proudly represented our College at the Inclusive School Futsal Titles. The team played four games at the Port Macquarie Indoor Sports Stadium, remaining undefeated and bringing home the Inclusive School Futsal trophy.
The students demonstrated excellent sportsmanship throughout the day by cheering on their teammates and congratulating other teams. A big thank you to Ash Cramp and Pip Martin for their support in the lead-up to, and on the day of, the competition.
Student feedback:
Sienna – “I enjoyed making new friends, defending, and almost scoring a few goals. I learnt that you don't have to be hard on your team; cheering them on is better. I really enjoyed meeting new people.”
Ava – “I enjoyed kicking goals and playing against students from other schools as I met new people. I learnt how to play futsal properly, and even if you don’t get the ball, you can block other plays.”
Ava – “I enjoyed cheering on my teammates. I really like the teamwork; I think we worked really well.”
Declan – “I enjoyed playing with new friends and scoring goals. I scored 4 goals. I also enjoyed clearing the ball from the other side of the field to help get a goal.”
Levi – “I enjoyed scoring free tries and raising the middle.”
Coach: Ash Cramp and Pip Martin
