Principal's Update

Christmas wishes

As I write my final newsletter article for 2023 I reflect on my message to students at last Monday’s Awards ceremony. I reminded students that in a world where it has become all too easy to find the negative and blame, we can sometimes forget to recognise and talk about all the good that is taking place every single day. I encouraged students to take a moment to praise themselves, and their peers, for all the good that has been achieved. I reminded them that throughout 2023 I had witnessed so many examples of students displaying qualities of kindness, striving for excellence and working hard. Sometimes I am sure that it feels like efforts go unnoticed, but that teachers and parents see you and appreciate you greatly. Perhaps we just forget sometimes to acknowledge, and give thanks, for all the good things.

I encouraged students to take the time to enjoy and acknowledge their efforts and achievements in 2023 and to ensure they recognised and acknowledged all those who had helped them throughout the year.

Hopefully, families have an opportunity to do this over Christmas too.

I also pray that families have the time to stop and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas; to share in a Christmas Mass with our parish community and families and to reconnect with the Christmas message of Christ’s coming and his example of goodness and community.

On a personal level, I would like to thank all parents, staff and students for your ongoing support and partnership in ensuring MacKillop is a wonderful learning environment for our young people.

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish students and families who are leaving MacKillop this year, some to go to Newman for Years 11 and 12, others moving town, a happy, healthy and prosperous future.

To the staff who are leaving MacKillop College, I wish you all the very best for the next stage of your career and thank you for the wonderful service you have given to MacKillop College. In particular, to Mrs Jenni Sewell and Mrs Bronwyn Avery, I wish you all the best in your new directions and to our retiring staff, Mr Dino DiBona and Mr Rob Geaney, and to Mrs Jenny Watson and Mrs Leonie DiBona who are both taking 12 months leave I wish you good health and happiness with the adventures that await you.

To Mrs Christine Harmer who completes her role as Assistant Principal: Learning and Teaching which she has so capably filled whilst Mr Adam Kelly was on secondment to the Lismore Catholic Schools Office, my sincerest thank you for your leadership and support of staff, students, families and on a personal level myself for the past two and half years. Christine will remain as part of the College leadership Team in 2024 and will be Acting Principal during my leave in Term 1.

Finally, I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a happy and safe holiday season.

Semester 2 2023 Reports

Below is some information from Mrs Christine Harmer on our Semester Two reports. With the introduction of Compass, we have moved to a new reporting model that has taken many, many hours of work from Mrs Harmer and Mrs Meg Thomas. As we learn this new program we envisage being able to communicate greater information to parents on students learning and progress.

All parents and students in Years 7 – 10 can now access their Semester 2 Reports via the Reporting Tab in Compass. You will note that all of your child’s reports have been moved across from Schoolworx to Compass for your convenience.

As this is our first time using the Reporting Package of Compass you will note some differences to our previous report. These include

  • Common Grade distribution is displayed as a table.
  • Commitment to Learning has a new scale: Always, Usually, Sometimes, Rarely and Never.
  • Events and Co-Curricular involvement can now be included on the Pastoral Care page. Please note we have not included all events and involvement and we will continue to develop and improve in this area.
  • Mathematics is presented in a different format
  • The Common Grade and Results Distribution table appears in the centre of the page
  • Knowledge, Skills and Understanding appear as words, not ticks.

As we were working on the Compass reporting package for the first time the decision was made to use the program differently with the Mathematics KLA, to work towards a whole school change in 2024. The different format is a result of the change in process for that KLA.

Information about the report can also be found on the inside cover of the report.

Please take the opportunity to discuss the report with your child and if you require any further information, please contact your child’s teacher.

2023 YEARBOOK

Our 2023 Yearbook is almost complete and ready for print. The yearbook is a wonderful memento of the 2023 school year. Each family has been billed for one copy of the yearbook which will be distributed in February. Students who are moving to Newman will have the books delivered to Newman in early March.

Getting ready for 2024

Classes 2024:

Class timetables will be accessible to students on Compass from 29 January. Students and parents are reminded that changes to class lists will not be made (unless exceptional circumstances are at the discretion of the Pastoral Care team). It is College practice that all students are expected to ‘give it a go’ for at least the first four weeks of term as meeting new people and changing peer groups and new environments are healthy preparation for life beyond school and build confidence, resilience and social skills.

Uniform 2024:

As you shop for 2024 please ensure all items comply with the College Code of Presentation

MacKillop College Code of Presentation

When buying shoes, parents and students are reminded:

  1. shoes must be plain (no obvious logos), all black, all leather (no rubber toes), polishable lace-up shoes;
  2. sport shoes must be lace-up jogger or cross trainer style suitable for sport;
  3. sport shoes must have arch and heel support;
  4. no canvas shoes, gym boots, skate shoes or other casual footwear permitted.

Please carefully consider the length of uniform items and to adjust them, if needed, before the commencement of school next year.

The Advent Wreath

Advent is a four-week season in the Church calendar, it is a time of preparation and anticipation for the arrival or “advent” of Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah.  Christians celebrate this time with reflections on hope, peace, love and joy.

The wreath and candles are full of symbolism tied to the Christmas season. The wreath itself, which is made of various evergreens, signifies continuous life. The circle of the wreath, which has no beginning or end, symbolises the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul, and the everlasting life we find in Christ.

The candles also have their special significance. The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent, and one candle is lit each Sunday. Three of the candles are purple because the colour violet is a liturgical colour that signifies a time of prayer, penance, and sacrifice.

This Sunday we enter the third Sunday of Advent and the pink candle, symbolising joy is lit. It is called the “Shepard’s Candle,” and is pink because a rose is a liturgical colour for joy. The third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday and is meant to remind us of the joy that the world experienced at the birth of Jesus, as well as the joy that the faithful have reached the midpoint of Advent.

The White candle is placed in the middle of the wreath and is lit on Christmas Eve. This candle is called the “Christ candle” and represents the life of Christ. Celebrating Advent is an excellent way to prepare your mind and heart for Christmas.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education

Did you know…

  • Gathang was a community language spoken by the six tribes of the Mid North Coast when they gathered - Port Macquarie Taree, Wauchope, Forster, Tuncurry and Gloucester
  • Birpai people are Traditional owners of some 7,300km2 of Mid North Coast land from Port Macquarie to Gloucester and down to Taree.
  • One of the seven totems of the Birpai people is the stingray and it is most closely associated with the northernmost Birpai clan around Point Plomer.

Goori Action Plans are being organised to coincide with the #weThrive Conversations on February 1st and 2nd. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students entering Years 7, 9 and 11 in 2024, will have the opportunity to meet and speak to their PC teacher as well as book a time to speak to Monique or Sarina and plan the next steps to success by formulating their personalised Goori Action Plan.

Wellbeing

That’s a wrap…

Well if you are anything like me you are not going to be wanting to spend a lot of time reading school information on the last Friday of the school year so I’m going to keep it brief!

Wishing you all the best for the holiday period, enjoy your friends and family and travel safely if you are venturing out of beautiful Port Macquarie.

The holiday period is a wonderful time but can also be a difficult time for some parents, guardians and young people alike.  If you need any help during the break please reach out to one of Port Macquarie’s assistance services.  (PMQ Mental Health Services)

Take care and Merry Christmas!

Leader of Wellbeing - Social and Emotional Support

Events and Excursions - Important Information

It has been six months since the Compass platform processed our excursions and events.
To assist parents and carers with implementing the new system, we completed follow-up emails, SMS, and phone calls to ensure your child did not miss out.

However, now that everyone is familiar with the system, we will no longer be completing the length of follow-up that currently happens. There will be no follow-up phone calls; only a reminder email and text will be sent before the event's due date.

If consent and payment are not made before the consent due date, your child cannot attend.

School Bus Travel Changes for 2024

Due to multiple road closures being completed and commencing during the upcoming Christmas/New Year Holidays, Busways have provided Schools' with advance notice to assist with student travel planning for Day 1 of Term 1 2024.

Year 7

I would sincerely like to thank the Year 7 PC Team: Rachel Clark, Laura Cudmore, Lisa Wilton, Erinn Smith, Roxanne Montgomery, Mitchell Buchtmann, Brent Lowery, Colin Coelho, Bradley Vergano, Christa Morrow, Nicole Gough, Madeline Philipson, Nicki Gray and Amber Thompson. Year 7 is very lucky to have them and I am truly grateful for all that they do.  Without their dedication, care and hard work, the students in their care would have had a very different experience during the year.

To Year 7, their families and the wider MacKillop community I wish you all a safe and restful Christmas and a happy New Year. As you return in 2024 remember to come with an appreciation of what we have accomplished this year and an acknowledgement of what a great place MacKillop College is to be a part of.

I need to remind next year’s Year 8 about the importance of adhering to the school policies when they return in 2024. They will no longer be the youngest students in the College and they must start to lead by example. My expectations for their effort and behaviour will be higher and I look forward to them rising to the challenge. There will be checks from day one on uniform, haircuts, jewellery, make-up, shoes, and punctuality to class. I would hate to have to send students home for extreme haircuts or piercings that break our Code of Presentation on the first day of school.

Year 8

We wrap up 2023 with Year 8 enjoying the rewards of developing positive connections and actualising the timeless wisdom of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop: 'Find happiness in making others happy.'

It has been great to spend a considerable amount of time with Year 8 and learn more about them as individuals. The South West Rocks Camp will be a highlight to remember. I highly value the partnerships that I have created with the students, parents and carers throughout the year. Farewell to those students leaving us, I wish you the very best. I will continue as the Leader of Pastoral Care with Year 9 in 2024 and I look forward to strengthening those partnerships. Thank you for another memorable year.

UNIFORM 2024

Many families may need to purchase uniform items over the summer. A reminder to parents of the following when considering/purchasing items for 2024:

  • be particularly vigilant when purchasing shoes:
  1. shoes must be plain (no obvious logos), all black, all leather (no rubber toes), polishable lace-up shoes;
  2. sports shoes must be a lace-up jogger or cross-trainer style suitable for sport;
  3. sports shoes must have arch and heel support; and
  4. no canvas shoes, gym boots, skate shoes or other casual footwear are permitted;
  • check your child has a College hat or cap which they are required to bring to school each day. Some students have lost theirs during the year. The College hat or cap must be worn when students are outside during recess and lunch times, (unless they are under shelter or in the shade) participating in outdoor physical activity and at the explicit direction of staff;
  • please carefully consider the fit and length of uniform items and adjust them, if needed, before the commencement of school next year;
  • on return to school, hair should be tidy and of a natural colour; hair accessories must be black, white or gold. Hairstyles should not be of an extreme style. Hairstyles that draw unnecessary attention are not permitted; including but not limited to mohawks, mullets or shaved lines; and
  • on return, students may wear plain sleeper earrings or studs (a maximum of two in each ear), one ring and a watch. No facial piercings are allowed. Clear studs are not permitted. Makeup, artificial nails, nail polish and false eyelashes are also not permitted.

CLASSES 2024

Students will receive their timetables via Compass on 29 January next year before their return to school. I request parents and caregivers be mindful that there are many considerations and limitations when it comes to round classes. With 215 students it is not logistically possible to ensure all students have 'a close friend' in their class. School is also about preparing our young people for the working world whereby at 14, 43 or 44 we will be required to work with various people who may not always be like-minded and whom we do not know well. At MacKillop, we accept all and respect everyone’s right to dignity and learning.

Please encourage your son or daughter to have a positive mindset to change, faith and understanding that the existing friendships they enjoy will strengthen with continued connection outside the classroom, and to be open to forming new friendships and positive peer relationships.

PC TEACHERS

I would like to say a huge thank you to the Year 8 pastoral team. I am always inspired by the genuine care and dedication these teachers have for their students. Year 8 was very lucky to have them and I am truly grateful for all that they do.

Sadly, we say goodbye to Liam Brown who will be leaving us at the end of the year to work in Victoria. Liam Brown has been very caring of 8I3 and a wonderful support person to them and me. Thank you also to Thomas Germon who maintained enthusiasm and care for 8I1; we wish him well in his future endeavours. We also take the opportunity to wish Ebanie Green, Naomi White and Ryan Adams well with their new Pastoral Care teams at MacKillop.

We welcome Claudia Whitten working with Amber Ford and 9F2, Renae Bignell and Andrea Huxley to 9I1, Phil Magick to 9I3 and Tiffany Edwards and Amber Mann to 9M2 as part of the 2024 PC team.

We all look forward to working with the students and their families as we navigate Year 9 together.

SEASONS GREETINGS

Finally, together with the Year 8 Pastoral Care team, we wish all students and their families a happy, safe and holy Yuletide and a fun, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Nicole O’Connell
Year 8 Leader of Pastoral Care

Girls Club

We wrapped up Girls Club for the year with a fun Christmas party and karaoke singalong. Girls Club started in Term 2 this year to be a place for girls to gather, have fun, develop a sense of belonging and form connections with each other. We have had a great time getting to know each other and learning new skills such as origami, STEM challenges, crafts, crocheting, and the best songs to sing. We look forward to welcoming the girls back next year. New members are welcome!

Stephanie Connor and Rachel Clark

Year 9

As we approach the conclusion of another academic year, it is with sincere appreciation that I extend my thanks to the Year 9 Pastoral Care Team: David McMahon, Michelle Marino, Megan Verdon, David Kennedy, Amy Ryals, Bronwyn Avery, Richard May, Ebanie Green, Debra Kenworthy, Susan Eichorn, Dougal MacIntrye and Stephanie Connor. Their tireless dedication and unwavering support have played a pivotal role in shaping the experiences of our students. Their commitment to nurturing and guiding our young learners has undoubtedly laid the foundations for a future filled with promise and achievement.

As we take a moment to reflect on the year that has passed, I want to express my gratitude to the parents and families who have been an integral part of our community. Your ongoing support has played a crucial role in the success of our students, and we look forward to continuing this partnership in the years to come.

Looking ahead, the transition from Year 9 to Year 10 marks a significant step in our students' educational journey. As we embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, I encourage all students and their families to enjoy a well-deserved break during this festive season. Take this time for rest and relaxation, surrounded by the warmth of family and friends.

The coming year holds great promise, and with a rejuvenated spirit, we will embark on new academic endeavours with rigour and enthusiasm. May the festive season bring joy, laughter and cherished moments to each of you.

Year 9 & 10 Science

Recently, Year 9 and 10 students with a passion for science and mathematics, with a specific interest in space, attended the New Space Workforce Xperience live webinar, run out of Optus in Sydney. Optus has several roles related to space, specifically in the use of geostationary satellites in their telecommunications network.

Students heard from three outstanding role models who were all in the early stages of their careers:

  • Kirsten Banks - a proud Wiradjuri woman who is a rising star in the field of astrophysics and science communication. She is currently pursuing a PhD in astrophysics at UNSW. Kirsten is also a passionate science communicator and frequently engages with the public through social media and public speaking events. She has appeared on numerous television programs and has been featured in various print and online publications.
  • Andrew Murphy - started working with Optus in 2022. He has a dual bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering and physics where he learnt about the foundations of space engineering that has led him to exercise his lifelong passion for space at Optus. Andrew has worked across several areas including Spacecraft Engineering, Systems Engineering, Marketing and Sales where he has gained an end-to-end understanding of satellite business.
  • Shae Ingram - a Graduate Spacecraft Engineer at Optus. She recently graduated with a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering, where she was heavily involved in student societies, including serving as Co-President of the Sydney Women in Aerospace Engineering Society at the University of Sydney. Shae has been working full-time with the Satellite and Space Systems team at Optus, where she currently works specifically in payload engineering, looking at how to send and receive signals to communicate with the Optus fleet of satellites.

Each of these people spoke about the importance of making the most of the opportunities presented to them, both in and out of the classroom, in helping to ‘open doors’ to career pathways that they had never considered when they were in school. The character strength of curiosity was also a common theme, which, when combined with a critical mind, allowed them to develop problem-solving skills that are required for university study and their careers. They also spoke about their studies in university as being a place where they were with like-minded people who were passionate about the same things and who had become mentors and great friends along the way.

The main message from the speakers was one of encouragement - they are each where they are after following the same high school path that our students are currently on, and you are only limited by the effort you put into yourself and your learning. It was a refreshing reminder that every day matters and you are ultimately the master of your destiny.

Year 10

Although the majority of our Year 10 cohort will persist in their educational journey at MacKillop College in 2024, others are embarking on new adventures at Newman College, securing employment or apprenticeships, or exploring alternative paths of further education. Year 10 2023 stands out as a vibrant and transformative year in high school life. From the Year 10 Information Evening in Term 1 to the exciting Endless Summer beach day our journey has been marked by friendship, self-discovery, and academic exploration.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Kate Cowan, Amy Ryals, David Pugh, Danny Murphy, Michael Peck, Nikki Lutton, Phil Magick, James Way, Teena Northey, Fiona Nancarrow, and all the PC assistants for their commitment and hard work dedicated to Year 10 this year. Your support is deeply appreciated, and it's a privilege to work with a team that consistently prioritises the needs of Year 10. Many members of this team have been with our Year 10 students since the very first day of Year 7. Undoubtedly, PC teachers are bidding farewell to their PC classes with a treasure trove of fond memories and a profound sense of pride.

I extend my gratitude to our departing 2023 Year 10 Student Representative Council. Your support and encouragement throughout the year have been truly invaluable. A warm welcome to our incoming 2023/2024 SRC. Witnessing fresh faces within our Year 10 Leadership team is inspiring, and I commend all these students for their willingness to step forward. I have already observed enthusiasm and potential among the group, and I eagerly anticipate working with each of you.

I look forward to our continued relationship as I move to Year 11 alongside our Year 10 students, embracing new experiences and challenges together.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Dominic Buckley and Cooper Sheldon who have received a Silver Principal’s Award.

Congratulations to the following students who have received a Leader of Pastoral Care Award: Dominic Buckley, Emma Burge, Beau Chegwidden, Jack Gould, Sehtaya Gordon, Georgie Healey, Ashton Newton, Cooper Sheldon, James Strahorn, Sophie Taylor and Stephen Walther.

Exams and Results

Exams are now over, and this week students will be receiving some of their first HSC assessment results. This can be an exciting time, but it can also be a disappointing time. I cannot emphasise enough the importance of conversation, encouragement and pragmatism when discussing exams and results with our students. There is no point in looking back, and the only way to successfully navigate the rest of the HSC journey, regardless of your successes or failures, is to keep going forward and to keep trying to improve a little bit every day. If you are disappointed with a result but you did your best, that is enough. If you’re disappointed with your results because you didn’t work hard enough, then go about fixing the problem. It’s that simple.

I stress to our HSC candidates that exam results do not define them and therefore should not contribute to a demise in their self-worth. What defines a person is their ability to love and encourage others, to find the good in difficult situations, to be grateful for what they have and to display resilience in the face of adversity. To be good at those things takes practice, and in a way, disappointments along our journey help us practice, they guide us to be a better person. If we can be disappointed with a result or two but still encourage others, still be happy in the accomplishments of other people, still adapt to find a better way forward for ourselves and still push forward to be better each day, then we are winning, and everyone around us benefits too.

Park Run

Every Saturday since the start of this term, a group of Year 11 students have put on the joggers, headed down to Town Beach and done our best to plod out the Port Macquarie Park Run. The regular starters have included: Tallara Duck, Maeve Kinchington, Sally Temple, Archie Kay, Bailey Pawlak, Andrew Yates, Evan Barnsley, Victoria Clapoudis, Caitlyn Pares and Lily Taylor. We have been joined on occasion by Tom Ryan as well as Tara Mitchell.

I won’t lie, this old man is past his running days, and it’s certainly much more difficult than I remember, however, it is a great way to start a Saturday and the company is first class. This week we will be following up our running with a team breakfast. If anyone else in Year 11 would like to join us this weekend or in the new year, you are most welcome.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to the following students who have received a Leader of Pastoral Care Award: Jaz Breust, Nina Menin and Zalia Tafai.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

May all our senior students and their families have a joyous and happy holiday, and may your Christmas be full of love and laughter.

Year 9 Sport Term 1 2024

Your child will participate in the Surf Survival Certificate during sport for Term 1, 2024.  This is an extension from the Swim and Survive Certificate that students completed in Year 7 Sport. Aquatics is a compulsory component of the PDHPE syllabus for all Year 9 Students. No students will be permitted to do Contract Sport in Terms 1 and 2.

This course will be run in conjunction with Surf Life Saving NSW and the Australian Lifeguard Service which will provide specialised instructors to assist our PDHPE/SPORT staff. All appropriate water safety measures will be in place to ensure the safety of our students in an open-water environment. This course caters for students of all swimming abilities and aims to improve the safety of individuals in an aquatic environment.

The Surf Survival Certificate is a national swimming and water safety program that aims to provide participants with the skills and knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness to be able to participate in lifesaving operations.

Basketball

Junior Girls Teams

On 24 November two junior basketball teams completed in the Port Macquarie Girls 3 x 3 carnival.

The carnival promoted women in Basketball and sportsmanship was at the forefront.  However, it was a great day to promote the 3 x 3 game that is becoming increasingly more popular.

Both of our teams demonstrated extremely strong basketball skills and enjoyed the 3 x 3 format. A huge congratulations to both teams who moved through the rounds undefeated, both winning their respective divisions very comfortably.

Nicci Thompson - Coach

U16 Girls

The MacKillop 9/10 girls had a fantastic day and improved with every game. The girls had mixed results in the round games but went through to the grand final against Hastings Senior College. MacKillop defeated this side in the round game but went down 3-8 in the final.

All of the girls played with great sportsmanship.

The MVP for the team was Kyla Roach

Anna Gleeson - Coach

NRL Summer 7s

Open Boys

The Summer 7’s Rugby League competition gave our senior boys a chance to do something physical after a long term of classes and learning. The young men performed admirably throughout the day, despite having only one Rugby League player in our team and a couple of boys tired out from a long night of studying.

Our first game was against Newman College, a rival team we know very well. Newman are well-drilled League players and provided the challenge we were looking for. Archie Kay gave us a boost by scooting down the blind side early in the game and being too fast for the opposition to score under the post for an early lead. The humidity (who plays Rugby League in November anyway?), and a shortage of reserves proved to be our undoing as we tired very quickly and were overrun by our opposition as the game progressed. Though beaten, we were certainly not disgraced thanks to outstanding and tireless performances from Tyse Thrower, Bailey Pawlak, Vaughan Munro and Cody Mills on the back of our “go-forward man” Jacob Power.

These players continued their good form in the second game against Camden Haven and were matched by strong games from Will Saunders, Lochie Jones and Ryan Hancock. Unfortunately, a head knock to Archie Kay gave us one less reserve, and he was joined on the bench by Ryan Hancock late in this game after a head clash with an opposition player. The effort of our remaining players saw us come back to force a draw with two late tries.

Our last game turned out to be the final against Newman College. Down to one reserve, and up against superior strength and agility, it was time to pull out the secret weapon – Jesse Fisher. Jesse provided the hit-ups through the middle and was ably supported by strong games from Evan Pitt, and the two fittest players, Cody Mills and Tyse Thrower who stood out as others fell away. Unfortunately, our secret weapon could only do so much, and we succumbed to the excellent skills of our opposition.

Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day. The boys displayed great sportsmanship, constant effort and more importantly great company throughout the day.

MVP: Tyse Thrower

Bruce Smith - Coach

U16 Boys

The Summer 7s Rugby League tournament was a great way for this group of boys to finish off the rugby league season this year. The short, fast-paced games allowed our team to display their superior passing skills and speed.

The team finished second in their pool after convincing victories over Camden Haven High and Wingham High and a loss to Chatham High School. In the semifinal against Melville High our team was almost perfect in their control of possession and progressed easily into the final.

The final was a rematch against Chatham High School The boys adjusted their style of play after the heavy loss in the round games and entered the match with more confidence. They controlled possession well, played to our strengths and beat them on the edges with speed to take the victory. A fantastic result based on effort and resilience.

Congratulations to all the boys. While there were some stand-out performances in each game this tournament result was a whole team effort.

Warren Lorger - Coach

U16 Girls

Our first pool game was a solid 4 tries to 2 victory over a classy St Paul’s Kempsey team with both Ruby O’Bryan and Penny Sprague scoring a brace of tries. Second, we played a very skillful Chatham High School and through excellent organisation and ball skills were able to win 2 tries to 1 which meant we qualified first in our pool for the semi-finals.

The semi-final was an all-out attacking display from our girls who went on to win 4 tries to 1 against a gallant Camden Haven High School. We had many more opportunities to score, however, the last pass let us down on several occasions. This victory saw us face a very well-drilled and skilful St Clare’s in the final. Sadly, they were too strong and we went down 3 tries to 1. Although disappointing to lose, the girls kept trying right to the very end, despite being exhausted due to it being an incredibly hot and humid day.

Finally, a special mention must go out to Penny Sprague, Milla Swain and Sehtaya Gordon for organising the team on the field, Niah Evans, Charlee Lawlor and Lilly Dunshea for their tireless efforts in the middle of each game, and Ruby O’Bryan and Alanah Logan-Pye for their try-scoring feats across the day. The team gave their all in every game and played the game in a spirit that would make any parent proud.

MVP: Sehtaya Gordon

Dave Kennedy - Coach

U14 Girls

On Tuesday 28 November, the Under 14s girls' team finished the year of rugby league with a sevens format competition. The 2023 NRL Summer 7s is a fast-paced and high-scoring game with no conversions. On a scorching hot day with only 10 players, the team demonstrated their amazing talent and sportsmanship in both attack and defence. They also showed their versatility by changing positions throughout the games to give everyone a rest.

The first game was against Camden Haven High School. During the 16-minute game, the girls scored an amazing 6 tries. With Arliah back from injury she was able to show her speed in the fullback position and score three tries. Gemirah excelled in hooker following the play and supporting breakthrough runs as well as taking a few runs close to the line and scoring a try. Lily with her half length of the field kickoffs and ball work also scored and Ella’s speed and strong tackles in centre position allowed her to score, resulting in a 24-0 win.

In the second game, we faced Kempsey High School. This game was a little closer but still, several tries were scored to secure the win 16-4. Evie and London showed their power through the middle with strong runs and fending off players to score tries. Lily and Darcie excelled with footwork, speed and ball skills taking charge of the attacking and scoring successful tries.

Our last round game was played against St Paul’s College Kempsey and another successful win (24-0). The team's strong defence was on display in this game, keeping the opposition out and defending their line extremely well with slide defence and supporting each other. Tarliah scored three tries and Ella, Lily and Evie got one each.

The final was played against Camden Haven. It was another successful game, with the team lifting again to win the tournament and be awarded champions on the day. Congratulations to all the girls. A special mention to Arliah Morris who was awarded player of the tournament and Evie Hewens who was awarded player of the final.

MVP: Arliah Morris
