Semester One Awards Ceremonies
On our final day of Semester One, Friday 30 June, the College will hold the Semester 1 Academic Awards Assemblies for Years 7-11. Parents and carers are warmly welcome to attend.
These awards are distributed to students in recognition of their effort and achievements throughout Terms 1 and 2. The great majority of students work hard throughout the Semester and deserve recognition from peers, teachers, support staff, parents and carers.
All students are expected to attend this day as a celebration of each other's efforts and achievements. Such celebrations and formal assemblies are an important aspect of the culture of MacKillop and the living out of our College motto of striving for excellence. The formal nature of the Assemblies also means all students are to be in full formal uniform.
The time and venues for each year groups Award Assembly is outlined below:
9:15am - Year 10, Lochinvar Centre
9:15am - Year 9, College Hall
10:30am - Year 8, College Hall
10:30am - Year 7, Lochinvar Centre
2:15pm - Year 11, Lochinvar Centre
It is custom that in recognition of the effort and achievement of students throughout the Semester students in Years 7-10 may go home after their assembly. To do so if a student is leaving with their parents, riding or walking home a note must be given to the PC teacher during Week 10 and MUST be received prior to 9am on Friday 30 June.
If a student has permission to leave with another student’s parent the letter must clearly outline the name of the parent who they will be travelling with. A student who departs the College without permission will be considered truanting.
Teachers and support staff look forward to recognising the effort and achievement of their students on this special occasion.

Extended PC
In preparation for our Retreat Day, Year 8 were challenged in PC to work together in groups to accomplish a series of challenges including solving problems and achieving goals. The most proven important key to our happiness is our relationships with others: enjoying good friendships and showing care to our families, working with teachers and collaborating with peers. The value of the PC challenge was to recognise the positivity and how much can be accomplished when working well together where everyone is valued and encouraged to be their best self when navigating challenges as these photos demonstrate:
Connect and Belong Retreat Day
Yesterday, Year 8 students came together to celebrate Connect and Belong in a Retreat Day. The Connect and Belong day is designed to offer students the opportunity to explore and experience what it means to belong, and endeavours to help all students access the messages of connection, faith, belonging, gratitude, scripture, forgiveness, fun and relationship in an authentic way. Sessions involved topics such as:
Connect with others
- Connect with others and show love
- Love your neighbour as yourself
- Forgiveness
Connect with God
- Reflect on where and who God is in our lives personally
- Mindfully taking time to slow down
- Building our Relationship Bank Accounts
- Considering ways to increase our connection, peace and love
Connect with their world
- Consider our relationship to the world around us and the ways we can connect to something bigger
- Sharing our gratitude with others and our gratitude for others
- Exploring a sense of belonging and how we are all connected
This was such a wonderful opportunity to come together to reflect as a cohort. It was great to see students connecting in such a positive way.

Year 10 Maths
Real-life learning, connecting and Maths go hand in hand!
Recently one of our Year 10 Maths class enjoyed a shared pizza lunch thanks to the ideas of student Levi Bell.
Levi came up with the idea of a shared lunch and saw his idea come to fruition following a considerable amount of organisation. Congratulations Levi!
To make his idea a reality, Levi had to communicate with his fellow classmates and teacher, negotiate pricing with the local pizza company, consider appropriate timing and logistics for delivery, prepare a Google doc for tracking of orders and payment, place an online order and make it all happen.
We all thoroughly enjoyed chatting and connecting over pizza and soft drinks and even started to plan our next class event.
Who would have thought that so many positives can arise from one small idea.
Thanks, Levi for a great initiative that was so inclusive and so well thought through.

Athletics carnival (Tuesday, 20 June)
The College Athletics Carnival will be held next Tuesday, 20 June on the College ovals. This will be the Year 12’s last-ever school carnival so will no doubt go down in history as their best carnival ever!! The carnival will be a compulsory school day so I look forward to seeing all Year 12 students in attendance. There will be regular athletic events as well as plenty of novelty races and fun activities.
Careers Night - Pathways to Uni (Monday, 19 June)
The Careers Night - Pathways to Uni will be held in the Lochinvar Centre next Monday night from 6.00-7.00pm for all Year 12 students considering going to University in 2023 or beyond. The night will be run by Jo Pilgrim, the Leader of Careers, Transition and Pathways who will outline all the necessary information for students and parents. This is a very informative and important presentation for all Year 12 students and their parents/carers.
Attendance and Partial Absences
I asked the Year 12 students last week at our Year meeting how many school days (with lessons) were left until they start their HSC Trial Examinations. Many were shocked to hear there were only 23 days left (as of today there are now only 18 school days left) until their Trial exams start. I then asked them how many school days with lessons they thought were left until their HSC Exams started - as of today that number is 43 school days left until the HSC Exams start.
The purpose of the activity was to remind them of the importance of them arriving at school every morning by 8:40am and staying until 3:10pm. Many students are arriving after the bell in the morning and sign out early for medical appointments during the day or simply feeling tired so calling their parents to give permission to go home early. Making medical appointments during the school day should be avoided where possible. Feeling tired or having a study period is not a valid excuse for going home early. I encourage all students to be at school by 8:40am and stay the entire day until 3:10pm.

Eisteddfod Success - MacKillop College Dance Students Shine at the Coffs Harbour
Congratulations to our MacKillop College Dancers on their outstanding performances at the Coffs Harbour Eisteddfod held last Friday. All the dancers performed beautifully against some very strong competition.
The Year 11 Dance class took out a deserved 2nd place with their highly engaging and technical performance. Kudos to them for their hard work and dedication.
The Year 7 co-curricular group wowed the audience with their high-energy jazz-style routine, bringing excitement and enthusiasm to the stage. Similarly, the year 8 and 9 co-curricular group's moving piece with a powerful message left a lasting impact on the audience.
A special shout-out goes to Miss Ange from Port Macquarie Performing Arts for her amazing work and support. It's fantastic to have such a professional and talented tutor as part of the co-curricular program at Mackillop College. The students are indeed fortunate to have her guidance.
Thank you to Ms Amy Ryals for coming along and cheering on our dancers.
Last but not least, a heartfelt appreciation goes out to all the dancers for their hard work, dedication, and courage. They represented themselves and MacKillop College beautifully, and their efforts are to be commended.

Upcoming Athletics Carnival
Our Annual College Athletics Carnival is on Tuesday, 20 June. This carnival is a compulsory day for all students in Years 7-12 and is a real highlight of our sporting calendar. It is an opportunity for students to embrace their House spirit by dressing up in house colours and getting involved in all events whether it be competitive or novelty events. We have had many records tumble in the Pre-events that have been running over the past two weeks – it is so exciting to see students achieving their personal best in the athletic arena.
If students are unable to participate due to injury or illness a note outlining this needs to be handed to Mrs Denham. Often these students can still positively enjoy the carnival by offering assistance at the events.
We welcome all parents and guardians of our students to come along and support their children at this event and also welcome any parents that can give any assistance on the day. Please email Erin Denham if you are able to assist.

MacKillop Sport teams are on fire!
Diocesan Cross Country – MacKillop crowned Diocesan Champions!
On Friday, May 19, 53 MacKillop students competed at the Diocesan Cross-Country Championships in Grafton and produced some amazing results.
Congratulations to the following students who earned a podium in their race on the day and who now are part of the Diocesan cross-country team to race at the CCC Cross country at Eastern Creek in June. Ingrid Maher, Grace Morris, William Coombes, Oto Ryan, Matilda Medlin, Preston Davis, Freycin Hostettler, Tobias Toohey, Claire Pieren, Grace Davies, and Tia McGrath.
MacKillop also had another 8 students who placed in the top 6 and now join the Diocesan Cross Country team to progress to the next level in Sydney. They are as follows; Lane Jordan, Cooper Lorger, Eddie Coombes, Noah Pociask, Mackenzie Trimmer, Zoe Townsend, Locke Williamson, and Jasper Sumsky.
MacKillop College also proudly walked away, or should we say ran away again with the Champion School trophy. We would like to congratulate all the athletes who competed on the day for their outstanding behaviour and sportsmanship both on and off the track. Thanks must go to Erinn Smith, Suzie Coster and Stewart Smith for giving up their time to take away the team. We wish all the athletes the best of luck at the NSWCCC Cross Country Championships in Sydney.

NSW All Schools 9/10 Touch Football
9/10 Boys Team
Each team was competing for the title of Mid Coast champions as well as a spot in the NSW Touch State Finals and the MacKillop College boys were outstanding in the round games defeating teams predominately on the back of really good defensive play. Wins over Christian Heritage, Camden Haven, St Clare’s Taree and St Joseph’s Regional progressed the team into the finals. In the finals, the boys refined their attack and began to show some excellent attacking plays resulting in a convincing 4-1 win over St Joseph’s Regional in the final.
Cooper Lorger and Beau Chegwidden were outstanding in all aspects. While Max Gardner, Tobias Toohey and Jake Morgan were solid in their touch debuts for the College. The boys now progress through to the state finals later in the year in Sydney. Congratulations to all the boys in the team. MVP: Cooper Lorger
Warren Lorger (Coach)
9/10 Girls Team
The girls went into the tournament as hot favourites with a team full of Port Macquarie and Northern NSW Eagle representative players. After an easy win to start the day, the girls met a very spirited St Joseph’s Regional College team, determined to cause an upset in the local derby with a friend against friend and coach against a coach. SJRC got the better of the girls in the round games, setting up for a probable grand final clash later in the day.
A semi-final against St Clare’s Taree gave the girls an opportunity to have a reasonably tough match prior to the grand final. Matilda Medlin gave an outstanding example of how defence wins games, getting up in the face of the Taree playmakers and forcing turn-overs, ensuring our girls had the opportunity to showcase their attacking brilliance.
The grand final proved a fantastic match against SJRC as predicted. Having been scarred by the earlier loss the girls all followed Matilda’s example of urgent defence, forcing errors and frustrating the SJRC attack. With minutes to go the scores were locked until a great team try saw the girls take the gold and secure a trip to Sydney for the State finals in August. MVP: Matilda Medlin for leading the way in defence.

NSW All Schools 11/12 Mixed Touch Football
MacKillop College participate in the inaugural Year 11 & 12 Mixed Touch Challenge with a number of teams involved along the Mid-North Coast. This was a fantastic opportunity for our senior students to get involved and take the field in what was for our year 12 students, their last game of school touch football. The day started with a tough game against Camden Haven. Down by 2 heading into the tail end of the game MacKillop dug deep and settled the nerves to come back and draw our first match 2-2. We went from strength to strength in our round games dominating against Kempsey Adventist and Manning Valley. We then faced a very strong Newman College and the team played their best game of the tournament with standout performances from the dynamic duo Luke Hancock and Noah Thick leading the tries. A special mention to all our girls who displayed amazing defence in particular Ebony Bryant who shut down a number of tries on the wing. Unfortunately, we went down 5-3 however the team walked off with smiles on their faces knowing how well they played against the eventual winners of the day.
It was an absolute pleasure to coach such a fun, energetic and determined group of senior students and I congratulate all the players on their efforts. The Team consisted of Luke Hancock, Noah Thick, Lennox Jensen, William Kelly, Joshua Newton, Jesse Fisher, Rosina Smith, Tia McGrath, Yasmin Huxley, Ebony Bryant, Angele Field and Fleur Sherlock. MVP: Luke Hancock/Yasmin Huxley.

NSW Schools Cup AFL
Year 7 – 9 Girls Team
It was so great to see our young ladies take to the field recently to compete in the NSW AFL Schools Cup at Wayne Richards Park. For many of the girls, this was their first time playing AFL competitively and they took to it like ducks to water. Led by Grace Morris, Camielle Hostettler and Gia Hudson our team grew in confidence throughout the day demonstrating great skill and athleticism notching up three convincing wins.
Game 1: MacKillop 53 – Regional 16
Game 2: MacKillop 42 – Camden Haven 15
Game 3: MacKillop 62 – Regional 18
Congratulations to Matilda Medlin who was named Most Valuable Player. The girls were a pleasure to coach. Looking forward to October when the Girls and Boys take on the next level.
Thank you to Liz White, Chris Gridley and Susie Coster for sharing their passion and expertise with the girls.
Erin Denham (Coach)
AFL Opens 10 – 12 Team
It was a beautiful day in Sawtell for footy as the MacKillop Opens AFL Team took to the field for their place in the State Finals. Having a deep squad, we entered two teams (‘probable’ and ‘possible’ best 22) to compete against St John Paul College, Coffs Harbour, with round-robin style matches between all teams before our best 22 squad played St John Paul College in a proper final.
Our initial game against St John Paul was the first time the ‘probable best 22’ team had played together, with a number of skill and decision errors seeing us hit on the counter through some smart intercept marking from our opponents getting them away to a quick lead. Their inaccuracy in front of the goal saw them squander the chance to put us to the sword, and as our reading of the play and skill execution improved, particularly in the second half of the match, we were able to run away winners 6.3 (39) to 3.7 (28).
In our next match, a hit out between our squads, and the following game (‘possible best 22’ vs St John Paul College), we played with great spirit with the ‘probable’ beating the ‘possibles’ and St John Paul College running out winners against the ‘possibles’, but were able to put together a polished squad to play in the final. With a huge amount of talent across the park and utilising a very direct style of football, our best 22 piled on immense forward pressure, kicking 10.11 (71) while keeping St John Paul College scoreless. In a physical match, Mitch White caused defenders headaches with great movement and strong hands in front of the goal, finishing with 5 goals in a best-of-ground performance. All players contributed positively to the result.
A huge thank you to Will Kelly, Chris Gridley, Dirk Sheldon and Hudson Harmer and an especially massive thank you should also go to Erin Denham for all of the coaching and work put into our College sporting opportunities. We look forward to seeing the team compete in the Central Coast at the State Finals next week and are extremely proud of the boys’ efforts and the manner in which they represented the College on the day. MVP: Mitch White
Michael Peck & Will Kelly (Coaches)
Girls Open Team
It was a fun day for the girls, many of whom played their first-ever game of Aussie Rules. The girls did NOT lack determination, grit, strength or speed. They did not back down from a single tackle, kick, ruck, or opportunity to take a mark or feed the ball via a handball. However, they did feel overwhelmed at times by the plethora of rules and the use of space, which is a very different characteristic in Australian Rules Football when compared to the sports they are used to playing. I loved coaching the girls and with the assistance of Anna Gleeson, we saw them improve dramatically as the games went on.
At the end of the tournament, the girls were treated to a skills session with some of the women from the Swans, which was an excellent opportunity to learn a few more skills and understand some of the concepts of the game. We are looking forward to next year when we plan to come back and take home the win! MVP: Charlotte Weatherly.

Katrina Fanning Cup Under 14s & Under 16s
U14s Team
MacKillop College competed in a National Rugby League tournament on Tuesday, May 30. The Katrina Fanning Cup allows young female students a chance to play tackle football and showcase their talents and sporting abilities. In the 14s division, there were 7 teams from the Mid-North Coast. The divided pool allowed MacKillop to play 3 round games against Great Lakes College, Gloucester High School and St Paul’s College. The 14s won each round game and allowed our forwards, backs and wings time to develop their skills in attack and defence. They faced 2nd pool St Joseph’s Regional College in the finals again scoring an impressive three tries against Regionals one. This places MacKillop in the top two teams and secures their spot in the next level of competition which will be played later in the year. Congratulations to the whole team; Lily Moseley, Arliah Morris (AC), Gemirah Fernando, Darcie Gleeson, Evie Hewens, Claire Morris, London Curtis, Shannon Lusung, Tameah Baird-Moran, Millie Byrne, Ella Oliver, Matilda Medlin, Leah Hanson, Emily Cook, Riley Dailey and Tahlia Thompson. MVP: Arliah Morris
Kate Cowan (Coach)
U16s team
The Under 16 Girls Rugby League team performed extremely well at the recent Katrina Fanning Cup. We played Camden Haven HS in game 1 in what was a convincing win with Sehtaya, Charlee Bailey, Charlee Lawlor, Milla and Alana all crossing for tries. Charlee ‘Golden Boot’ Bailey also converted two tries.
Game two saw a greater challenge against Great Lakes finishing with a draw. Inala and Ruby injected themselves into this game off the back of some solid runs through Sophie, Niah and Lily.
The girls settled in Game Three against Melville with Ruby & Sehtaya both scoring tries.
We finished second in the pool with our for and against hurting us which meant we came up against strong opposition in St Joseph’s Regional College. Regional scored early on putting us on the back foot. Milla chimed into the backline scoring a try to keep the girls in the game. Unfortunately, Regional proved too strong. Congratulations to MVP Sehtaya Gordon
The Girls will play in the Regional Finals next week. Congratulation girls – some very entertaining football and a real team effort. Always a pleasure to coach.
Erin Denham (Coach)
Cochrane Cup Rugby League
Big effort from the boys at the Cochrane Cup, ending with one win and two losses. Started off with a close game with the strong side of regional, a two-point loss to JPC, and beating St Pauls Kempsey in a tough game. All the boys showed up for each other and played as hard as they could. Players player goes to Mason White who was solid in defence and crucial in the structure of the attack.
Well done boys, onto the next.

NSWCCC Open’s Basketball Finals
The Open Boys Basketball team recently competed in the NSW CCC Basketball Championships in Port Macquarie. The team started the competition strongly, defeating Marian College Kenthurst (55-38), O’Connor College Armidale (48-28), St Edwards Gosford (59-31) and St Gregory’s Campbelltown (42-24) on the first day of competition.
The team started the second day as they finished the first defeating St John’s College Dubbo (40-33) and St Francis Xavier Hamilton (45-30). This placed the team first in pool B and into the quarter-finals against All Saints Maitland. Another solid performance saw the boys win 52-46. The boys took this into the semi-final defeating Marcellin College Randwick (56-36). This placed us up against St Dominic’s College Kingswood in the final. In a very tough and extremely tight game, the lead changed multiple times. At the end of full-time, the score was locked at 31-31 which took the game into overtime. At the end of the overtime period, the score was again locked, at 36-36. St Dominic’s eventually pulled ahead, defeating the MacKillop team 41-38.
Congratulations to the MacKillop boys on winning the silver medal for the NSWCCC Championships. The team included Jesse Blain, Will Pamplin, Toby Harper, Sam Blain, Riley Harmer, Blake Collins, Kaden Lawler, Blake Romer, Lucas Scott & Malachy Kelleher. MVP: Sam Blain
Ryan Adams (Coach)
Bill Turner Boys Round 3
Our round 3 match was against St Joseph’s Regional, who, by all reports had a very strong side. We approached the game as normal and we were hoping to get on the front foot and put them under pressure.
Unfortunately, our opponent started very brightly and looked dangerous, particularly off the left side. We had to make some changes to mitigate their attack, and I commend our players for showing their adaptability in such tricky situations.
The pressure that they continually applied meant that we went into halftime a goal down.
At half-time, we made some changes with the intention of really pushing on in the second half. A goal from Jack Robb a couple of minutes into the half meant that it was game on!
Unfortunately, shortly after, we gave a couple of sloppy goals away. From this point on, we were always chasing the game. Throwing caution into the wind, we put more players forward in an attempt to get back into the game, however, this risk meant that we were left short at the back and conceded another couple of goals. The match ended 5-1 to Regional. It was a pleasure to coach the boys and with about half of this year’s squad still eligible to play next year, I am hopeful that next year will be our year. MVP: Noah Pociask who had plenty of saves to make in the first half.
Tom Salter (Coach)
Bill Turner Girls Round 3 v SCAS
Our Bill Turner Girls continued their winning streak with a dominant performance against St Columba Anglican School on home soil last week. I am in awe of how well this team is gelling and putting extremely strong performances together. The girls are playing with great confidence, skill and determination. Their ability to execute the game plan is to be commended. Our attacking team is ably supported by a strong backline that is proving difficult to get past. Abby, Sophie and Zora all found the back of the net with Zora scoring 5 goals – an outstanding effort and a great display of skill.
Most Valuable Player: Zora Boskovski
Erin Denham (Coach)
Diocesan Football Championships
Our Girls 7-9 Soccer team recently travelled to Coffs Harbour to play in the Diocesan Junior Football (Soccer) Competition. The girls were a little nervous as we had some late changes to our lineup. What is so impressive about this team is that no matter how much the make up of the team changes due to injury and so on the girls continue to outperform their opponents with skill, composure and teamwork. All of our shadows have been turning up to training and as a result, when called into the lineup to play have slotted in with ease.
Game 1: MacKillop 3 – JPC 1 (MVP Hannah Gresswell)
Game 2: MacKillop 4 – Trinity 0 (MVP Abby Buttsworth)
Game 3: MacKillop 5 – Mt St Pats 0 (MVP Ziva Balkin)
Game 4: MacKillop 5 – Woodlawn 0 (Abby Buttsworth)
Game 4: Semi-Final MacKillop 2 – Regional 1 (MVP Sophie Gallagher)
Game 5: Final MacKillop 4 – Xavier 3 (MVP Gracie Huxley)
The girls were undefeated all day being crowned Diocesan Champions. Congratulations girls – it is an absolute joy to coach you.

NSW Rugby Union Country Champs
Last weekend several of our students represented the Axemen Representative Rugby Union team at the NSW Rugby Union Country Championships hosted in several towns across NSW. Congratulations to Luke Jones and Darwin Tink on their team being crowned the best Regional Rugby Union team and 5th in the State. Well done boys.
The sky’s the limit
Congratulations to George Worner who recently achieved his first ‘solo’ flight. as a Hastings District Flying Club Scholarship Student.
According to George’s instructor, he had to contend with two inbound planes – one a Qantas Link and the other a Rex. He demonstrated professionalism in his communications with the other pilots who offered warm congratulations on his very smooth landing. This is an outstanding achievement and George is to be congratulated on pursuing his passion and achieving an amazing feat at such a young age.
If your child has achieved outstanding sporting results in their community sport, we would love to hear about it. Please email myself, or your child’s respective Leader of Pastoral Care, so we can acknowledge these achievements.
If you have any questions regarding sport at MacKillop College, please do not hesitate to contact me either by email or phone at the College.
