Term 1, Week 8, 24 March
Principal's Update
Deepest Sympathy
On behalf of the College community I would like to pass on our thoughts and prayers to the Ward family on the sudden passing of Stuart earlier this month. Stuart was a long-time volunteer at MacKilllop College, regularly helping in the College canteen and behind the BBQ at Information Evenings and special events. Stuart’s wife Debbie was, for many years, a member and chair of the St Agnes’ Parish Secondary School Parent Consultative Committee, Parent Assembly Representative as well as founder of the MacKillop College Parent Social Committee. Stuart’s adult children, Michael, Lauren, Katelyn and Daniel are all former students of the College. We ask for God’s Blessing and comfort for the family at this difficult time.
Student Success
Congratulations to Year 12 student and College Vice-Captain, Tess McWilliams, who has been invited to participate in the Australian Wanderers U18 Women's Rugby League tour of Europe in December and January. This is a fantastic achievement and a further step in Tess’s desire to play top level Women’s Rugby League and Union.
Harmony Day
One of the real highlights for me so far in 2023 has been the opportunity to welcome to the College International students and families, exchange students and visiting students from other countries.
The diversity of cultures that make up MacKillop College is wonderful to share in. Students from a wide range of backgrounds have been sharing with us their culture and traditions, encouraging a community of acceptance and recognition of the diversity within our MacKillop College community.
Parent Partnership
Over the past few months staff and students of the College have been reflecting and prioritising the College Core values. The reason for doing so is to ensure that all our planning, decisions and actions align firmly to what we as a Catholic school believe is important in caring for the education and wellbeing of all members of our MacKillop College community. You, the parents and carers of our young people are a key part of this community, and we want your input into the values and behaviours we wish to see in all who attend our College.
I warmly invite you to come along and join in the discussion and at the same time meet and share some drinks and nibbles with College leaders and fellow parents.
The night will be brief and informal with small group discussions.
To register for catering purposes please click here.

Easter Egg Launch
It is a MacKillop tradition that Year 7 engage in a special act of kindness for the whole school community by donating Easter Eggs over the remaining weeks this term. Their donations are packaged into hampers for our school Easter Egg Raffle held on the last student day of term. The success of the Easter Egg Raffle depends on Year 7 student’s generosity - if every student made a donation, that would be 223 chocolate goodies!
Every Year 7 student donation is acknowledged with a Merit Certificate for generosity and contributes to Father Donnelly’s House Cup Points.
They can also buy the raffle tickets and increase their chances of bringing home a chocolate treat for the holidays.
All proceeds from the raffle are given to Project Compassion.

Year 8
A quote from Dr Seuss that still resonates:
“You do what you do because of what you think of you.”
Last week, I spoke to Year 8 about making positive choices. I explained:
Our identity drives our actions. We should be guided by the BE-DO-HAVE process for personal decision-making.
Everyone wants to HAVE success and happiness. Not everyone wants to DO the work or BE the person required to HAVE success and happiness. Jim Rohn, a self-made millionaire, said, “the greatest reward to becoming a millionaire is not the amount of money you earn. It’s the kind of person you have to become, to become a millionaire in the first place.”
Many people try to achieve success and happiness in the opposite way. They focus on what they want to have, and not on what they need to BE or DO to HAVE it. It's a natural law. You can’t put the cart before the horse here - it’s BE, DO, HAVE.
You need to BE the person and DO the things that allow you to HAVE what you want to have.
Then I asked them to ask themselves daily: So who do you choose to BE today?
We want each Year 8 student to BE their best self, DO the things that will enable them to be the person they want to become, and HAVE greater personal success.
We proceeded to play 4-way volleyball in PC groups to interact with each other in a spirit of fun.

Resilience
Last fortnight I spoke about the courage needed to study, and this fortnight, Year 11 are just starting to understand this courage as they await results of their first assessment tasks. It’s a nervous time, and I have noticed that some of the students in my two classes being a little “on edge” lately.
I did say some, because there are also many who seem to be taking these challenges in their stride. Which got me thinking – Why are some of us able to waltz through stressful moments in our lives and others seem to get caught in a whirlpool of self-doubt and anxiety?
Answer: Resilience.
The development of resilience is important: it will keep you on track when things don’t go to plan, it will allow you to see past any emotional distractions and forge on, and it will ensure that you don’t waste time wallowing.
Psychologists studying resilience have discovered that self-compassion is an extremely important factor. Our inner voice has a tremendous effect on our emotional and even physical responses to challenge.
In Rudyard Kipling’s Poem “If”, a poem to his son about becoming a man, he talks about the attributes that you might acquire in order to achieve adulthood.
If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
I am a massive fan of this whole poem, but what I love the most about it, is Kipling’s referral to Triumph and Disaster being imposters: It is a great message, and a reminder to not get carried away when things are really good or when things seem really bad. In both cases, they are fleeting emotions.
For Year 11, there will be students that get amazing results, and there will be students who are very disappointed, but these results in no way define them. Each student is on their own journey of self-discovery, and we can help them in this journey, not by feeling sorry for them, but by helping them build resilience through self-compassion.
Let’s remind them, in all our conversations, that these results are just a tiny part of a massive journey. Let’s help them be self-compassionate by reassuring them and helping them move on. Let’s show them by being self-compassionate, by being forgiving and loving towards ourselves and others. Let’s help them move quickly from an emotional response to a more pragmatic response and on to acceptance. Let’s assure them, regardless of results, that if they have worked hard and have done their best, then that is enough.
And let’s remind them that Triumph and Disaster are visitors who never stay long.

Assessment Tasks and Study Tips
As you will be aware our Year 12 students are currently in the middle of a very busy assessment period with most of our students completing assessments in all of their HSC subjects in the last three weeks of this term.
While this can be a very stressful time for our students (and no doubt some of our parents as well) there are some simple Study Tips our young men and women can use to help get prepared and perform to the best of their ability on the day.
There are a variety of ways students can study and at the end of the day each student will have their own ideas on how they can study most effectively. Here are a few tips your young person may like to try if they are not doing so already:
- routine is everything;
- create a study environment that fosters productivity;
- set a timetable and try to stick to it;
- study smarter not harder;
- try different study techniques to find the best one for you;
- look after yourself;
- reward yourself for studying;
- have variety in your study program;
- test yourself and test yourself again; and
- do practice papers.
If your son or daughter would like some assistance with organisation, study techniques or creating a study timetable, Kim Porter and Amanda Gregory in the JMC Study Centre can allocate some time to sit down one on one with your child.
Time for some Fun!
Despite the heavy workload for Year 12 at the moment we have still managed to find some time to have fun.
Last Wednesday during Extended PC the Year 12 students played a massive game of Hunger Games which involved PC against PC trying to eliminate each other with noodles and coloured balls. It was definitely crazy but a lot of fun and the perfect way to let off some steam.
We also started PC Volleyball last Friday - Year 11 PCs versus Year 12 PCs. The atmosphere was awesome with plenty of laughter, enthusiasm and commitment from some very competitive students and staff. We will continue to play every Friday for the remainder of the term.
Lastly we came together on Wednesday for a Year 12 Chip Lunch. Who would have thought you could feed 144 students a chip lunch, but we did and it was a wonderful opportunity to come together and share a meal while checking in with each other at the same time.
An Amazing Achievement - Tess McWilliams
Tess McWilliams has been selected to represent Australia in Rugby League next January. This is an incredible achievement for an impressive young lady who has worked so hard to achieve her goals in her sporting endeavours. Tess will be part of the international touring squad that will be touring the United Kingdom and France to play top clubs, schools and representative teams and will work alongside the current Australian Schoolgirls Assistant Coach.
What an amazing opportunity for Tess in 2024. Congratulations Tess.

Music Curriculum News
Stage 4 classes have been exploring melody and the concept of pitch. Mrs Adams’ classes have been performing vocal melodies in class. Lessons have been set up in a similar style to The Voice with judges using classroom success criteria to “buzz” or “turn around” for performances. This learning has been continued through learning about melody using keyboards.
In other Stage 4 Music news, students have enjoyed the opportunity to learn how to play the drum kit. They have practised many different beats and patterns and presented a 4-bar performance for a mark to contribute to their Evidence of Learning portfolio.
Students then composed their own pattern demonstrating their understanding of notation.

Textiles Excursion
In week 6, Stage 6 Textiles and Design Students had the opportunity to view the TexStyle Exhibition in Sydney. Due to COVID restrictions, our students have not had the chance to view this exhibition for several years. The Students were able to view firsthand the Major Textiles Projects and portfolios from students that studied Textiles and Design for the Higher School Certificate in 2022.
Viewing this showcase provided students with opportunities to engage with exemplary work samples. The exhibition was held at the purpose built Gallery 76, presided over by the Embroiderers Guild of NSW. The students were treated to a seminar presented by various members of the Guild, and they were also extremely lucky enough to be invited into the Collections Room. Here students were able to witness textiles historically curated back as far as the 1600’s.
The students were also able to watch at the Capitol Theatre the production of Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat, go on a tour of Fabric Stores in Surry Hills and participate in a Textile challenge in the Queen Victoria Building. Students were also to able produce a Screen Print in an workshop at Signature Prints. They were also lucky enough to undertake a full tour of the factory in which the Australian swimwear brand “Budgie Smugglers” is manufactured. It was a busy and vibrant excursion with lots of knowledge gained by both accompanying Staff and Students.

Breaking News: Australian Selection
Congratulations to Tess McWilliams who was recently notified of her selection in the Australian Junior Girls Rugby League team to tour England and France in January 2024.
This is a huge accolade for Tess and so well deserved. Tess was a dual NSWCCC Rugby League and Rugby Union Representative in 2022. It is fantastic to see a student in a Regional area making such a prestigious team – Tess is very talented, passionate and driven. Her humble manner bodes her well both on and off the field. We are extremely proud of you Tess and wish you all the best as you embark on this exciting representative sporting journey.
Shield Report vs Woodlawn 2023
The MacKillop College Port Macquarie Berg Shield cricket team played St John’s College Woodlawn last month in the quarter final of the state-wide T20 competition for Catholic Schools. The match was played in Coffs Harbour on a very hot February day.
Woodlawn batted first and, in an amazing display of power hitting, amassed a total of 2/237 from their 20 overs. Opener Rory McLean hit 14 sixes on his way to an outstanding score of 174. Opening bowler George Worner was the only wicket taker for MacKillop finishing with 2/33 from his 4 overs. Harley Cottom, Archie Hawken and Cooper Sheldon, all bowled without luck. Max Robb kept wickets really well, only letting 3 byes through in such a large total.
It was always going to be difficult chasing such a huge score. The MacKillop batsmen tried to match the run rate early but could only manage a total of 95. Harley Cottom top scored with 27 to continue his good form in the competition. Jack Ryan (18) and Kale Haese (11) were the other batsmen to reach double figures.
Despite such a comprehensive defeat, the team did well to reach the quarter final stage of the competition. I would like to thank them for their efforts. A special thank you to Mr Scott Schumann for driving the bus and scoring on the day.
The Berg Shield team is:
Freycin Hostettler (c), George Worner, Harley Cottom, Mitchell White, Jack Ryan, Kale Haese, Alex Ball, Patrick Field, Cooper Sheldon, Riley Bates, Max Robb, Lane Jordan, Ben Spencer, Archie Hawken.

Diocesan Tennis Championships
Boys
Mackillop College entered two boys teams in the Diocesan Tennis Championships. Games were played at Arkinstall Park Regional Tennis Centre on Friday 10 March. Our Open Boys A team consisted of Noah Pociask and Flynn Burrage. Our Open Boys B team consisted of Jackson Bucci and Nicolas Kennedy. The Junior Boys team included Callum Clancy and William Coombes. All the players can be proud of their efforts and the sportsmanship they displayed. Both teams played some great tennis and fought hard in every set. The junior boys won two of their 6 sets. Our open boys A team were the highlight of the day and won 4 of their 6 sets.
Best and fairest:
Open boys – Noah Pociask
Junior boys – William Coombes
Richard May – Coach
Girls
Recently MacKillop College was represented by a team of 6 girls at the Tennis Diocesan Championships in Tweed Heads. Harmony & Shayla Mitchell, Milly McGrath and Victoria Clapoudis were in the Opens Girls division and in the Junior Girls division there were Tori McGrath and Claire Morris.
Congratulations to all the girls on their participation and sportsmanship on the day. It was wonderful to see the girls bonding and developing a real camaraderie with students from other schools. A special mention to Harmony and Shayla Mitchell who won 3 of their 4 games.
Best and fairest on the day goes to Shayla Mitchell in the Opens and Tori McGrath in the Juniors.
Amber Mann – Assistant Coach
Thank you to Mr McMahon, Mrs Bewicke, Mr May and Mrs Mann for giving up their time to coach and train our Cricket and Tennis players.
Community Sport
Grace Morris
Congratulations to Grace Morris who recently ran at the Run Festival in Port Macquarie.
Grace competed in the 5km Family Fun Run and finished 12th overall and was the 1st female to cross the line in an impressive time of 00:19:45 minutes. Dare I say we might have our next Elle Heeney in the ranks.
Well done Grace this is a blistering pace and we look forward to seeing you compete in many more races to come.
If your child has achieved outstanding sporting results in their community sport, we would love to hear about it. Please email myself, or your child’s respective Leader of Pastoral Care, so we can acknowledge these achievements.
If you have any questions regarding sport at MacKillop College, please do not hesitate to contact me either by email or phone at the College.
