Term 4, Week 1, 8 October
Principal
On Wednesday morning as I welcomed students back to Term 4 through a ZOOM Assembly I also had the pleasure of presenting the 2021/2022 Student Leaders with their badges. I spoke about the great privilege and responsibility of being a member of the Student Representative Council, being a voice for peers and having input into the ongoing improvement of MacKillop College.
We were able to thank and acknowledge the great work of our 2020/2021 Student Leaders and watched with pride as they handed over the responsibility to our new leaders in our traditional ‘Ceremony of Light’.
On behalf of the College community I ask God to look after our 2021/2022 leaders and guide them in their leadership.
A Leader's Prayer
Leadership is hard to define.
Lord, let us be the ones to define it with justice.
Leadership is like a handful of water.
Lord, let us be the people to share it with those who thirst.
Leadership is not about watching and correcting.
Lord, let us remember it is about listening and connecting.
Leadership is not about telling people what to do.
Lord, let us find out what people want.
Leadership is less about the love of power,
and more about the power of love.
Lord, as we continue to undertake the role of leader let us be
affirmed by the servant leadership we witness in your son Jesus.
Let us walk in the path He has set and let those who will, follow.
Let our greatest passion be compassion.
Our greatest strength love.
Our greatest victory the reward of peace.
In leading let us never fail to follow.
In loving let us never fail.
Congratulations to the following Student Leaders. I look forward to working with you over the next 12 months.

MENTAL HEALTH DAY
World Mental Health Day - October 10th - is a day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy. The theme for this year's campaign is to encourage people to "Look up, look out, and look forward!" by noticing their surroundings, taking care of others, and having activities on the horizon to feel enthusiastic about.
There has recently been media attention around the negative impact of social media on young people. To learn practical strategies to support your children to have a positive experience when online, register for one of the numerous free eSafety parent webinars on Digital technologies and Mental Health and Online Gaming.
CATH EICHMANN
PRINCIPAL
Assistant Principal - Learning and Teaching
This week it has been great to see students returning to the classroom, albeit a day later than planned, and we have certainly hit the ground running.
Year 12 are nearing the end of their formal lessons, and have begun their new flexible learning model. All students will be emailed the next weeks plan today, where once again they are required to register for their classes for Week 2. I encourage all students to make the most of this opportunity and target their areas of weakness and build on their strengths.
Year 11 have been busy meeting with Mr Michael Kelly our Careers Advisor in order to be well informed as they make their choices around discontinuing subjects or choosing extension courses. All students are required to attend their normal classes until the change appears on their electronic timetable in Schoolworx. Furthermore, next week I will visit all PCs and distribute the HSC handbook.
During the last week of Term 3 all Year 10 students who are continuing at MacKillop College in 2022 received an email informing them of their subject selections for Year 11. Any students who have concerns over their choices are encouraged to make contact, so that we can work through all of the options available. Plans are also underway for Year 10 to complete their Minimum Standards Test in the upcoming weeks. More information will be forthcoming in upcoming newsletters.

MACKILLOP COLLEGE YOUTH GROUPS AND MACKILLOP YOUTH INSTAGRAM
Now that we are no longer in lockdown, our amazing YMO, Ella has continued her work in offering our students faith and wellbeing experiences, through our MacKillop Youth Instagram (mackillop_youth_ministry) and our Youth Groups.
During Term 4 our Youth Groups will be held on Wednesday:
LIGHTHOUSE: Year 7-10 (Wednesday Lunch 2 – 1:35 pm)
SENIOR YOUTH MINISTRY (Wednesday Lunch 1 – 11:00am)
Conor Hudson, Youth Ministry Officer has volunteered to be with us on a Wednesday for our Youth Groups in Term Four.
YEAR 12 PRAYER SPONSORS
In his letter to the Philippians, Paul reminded us to “not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Phil 4:6), and from experience many of us know the power of prayer in our lives. Knowing that someone is praying for you is a source of great strength and consolation, especially during a particularly challenging time as we have experienced this year.
We thank those people from our St Agnes' community who have volunteered to pray for specific students in their extended preparation and during their HSC exams.
If you are keen to also volunteer for this, please contact Judy Smallwood on the college phone number: MacKillop College 6583 2632.
Thanks in anticipation of your help.

WELCOME FROM GREG FINNEY
Welcome back to all students and families for Term 4 and the last for Year 7 in 2021! Can you believe it!
It has definitely been a challenging year for everyone so far and let’s hope we can all get back into the school routine this term.
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to both parents and families as the Acting Leader of Pastoral Care for Year 7 for Term 4.
I am eager and excited to meet and engage with Year 7 over the term and to continue where Ellen McKell left off in guiding the cohort to a fantastic finish to the year. Mrs McKell has displayed outstanding leadership and Year 7 have flourished with friendships and confidence. I have no doubt that they will rise to any challenge with positivity and resilience as they finish the year.
A reminder that normal uniform expectations will still remain for the rest of the year including piercings or haircuts. The school uniform helps create a sense of connectedness to the College community. By wearing the College uniform correctly, you show we are all on the same team working together to create a school community where everyone belongs. The College Code of Presentation can be found on pages 13-15 of the student diary.
The College Diary is one of our key methods of communication and diaries are to be signed on a weekly basis by caregivers. Teachers and students will use the College Diary to record tasks, reminders and important information. Caregivers are also encouraged to use the diary as a way of reciprocating this communication. Working together is key to assisting our young people to achieve their personal best. Please do not hesitate to make contact with your student’s PC teacher or myself at any time.
If parents have any pastoral concerns for your child, in consultation with your child’s PC teacher, I will be only too happy to help. You can contact me directly via email at greg.finney@lism.catholic.edu.au
I would like to wish Year 7 the very best for Term 4, and I look forward to seeing you back in the playground and classrooms developing friendships and tackling the learning challenges ahead.
“Remember to be kind to one another”.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Abbie Brennan who has received a Silver Principal’s Award.
Congratulations to Abbie Brennan and Jaesan Edmund who have received a Leader of Pastoral Care Award.
GREG FINNEY
YEAR 7 ACTING LEADER OF PASTORAL CARE
Year 8
Welcome back to Term 4. I hope you all enjoyed a relaxing and restful break. We are all hoping and praying that this term will run without any interruptions, lockdowns or stay at home orders. I think we can all agree that the student missed the school grounds and that the best way for them to learn is when they are in front of their teachers and with their friends in the yard. I look forward to finishing off 2021 with Year 8 and please remember to contact me if I can help you in anyway.
UNIFORM
Uniform is always a topic of conversation with students and parents. Whenever I speak with a student about their uniform, shoes, haircut, jewellery etc they are always aware of the College expectations and what they are supposed to be wearing or not wearing. The start of the term is the best time to set the expectations from home as well. The Code of Presentation is located in the front of the College Diary and I would like to encourage you to sit with your child this weekend and discuss some of the expectations with them.
COLLEGE DIARY
The College Diary is there for students to use to manage their school work, assessments and help organise their days. It is also a very valuable tool for communication between teachers, parents and carers. The students should be writing out their subjects daily, recording any upcoming tasks and adding in reminders to help with their organisation. Parents and Carers are also asked to look at and sign the diary each week so we can maintain lines of communication between the College and home.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Matilda Jones who has received a Silver Principal’s Award.
Congratulations to the following students who have received a Leader of Pastoral Care Award: Fleur Jardine, Matilda Jones and Alexander Toth.
STUDENT SUCCESS
Olivia McGahon was recently recognised in this year’s Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards, with her poem being highly commended by the judges. Olivia’s poem, tears like bullets, was one of several she wrote as part of her work in the Year 8 English Poetry Unit and was awarded an A grade. The competition’s judges agreed, commenting that “very effective use of rhyme and images make this poem stand out. Lots to think about.” With the competition attracting 7,500 entries this year, this is high praise indeed! On the evening of Wednesday 7 October, Olivia participated in the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie’s poetry night, held via Zoom due to Covid-19 restrictions. Olivia presented a reading of her poem to the assembled Rotarians, who appreciated her mature choice of subject and the skill and sensitivity with which she represented it.
Thanks to Olivia and the many other Year 8 students who entered the competition, Port Macquarie Rotary Youth Director, Diana Gammon, will present a cheque of $300 to MacKillop College to purchase library resources.
Well done, Olivia, and thank you Port Macquarie Rotary.
tears like bullets
hurt beings hide behind their smile masks
wondering “when will this nightmare ever end?”
some cope with the pain, some use flasks
some light rolls of nicotine, some simply pretend
and like a thunderstorm they hope it eventually passes
but with every excuse they used for why they shed tears
it built mountains of suffering, slicing themselves with glasses
and glimmering blades, letting go of the future years
bystanders watched that not only damage can be done by guns
and they saw her life filled eyes look into his lifeless ones.

ALPHABET PRAYER
One night while babysitting, a grandfather passed his granddaughter’s room and heard her repeating the alphabet in an oddly reverent fashion. “What on earth are you up to, he asked?”
“I’m saying my prayers”, explained the little girl. “But I can’t think of exactly the right words tonight, so I’m just saying all the letters. God will put them together for me because he knows what I’m thinking.”
(Anonymous)
Great wisdom sometimes springs from the mouths of babes. We sometimes worry about how to pray and what to say. God is all knowing, all loving, and all forgiving. We don’t necessarily have to get the words right. We don’t have to be out to impress in our prayer. It is not a test or some kind of entry exam.
Over the holiday period, I have been reading a little about prayer. I was rather pleased when I happened upon the story above. Prayer, in its essence, is a deliberate giving of our time and our consciousness to God. It is a recognition of something greater than and beyond self, yet intimately linked with self. Prayer may take the form of silence or emotions. Prayer may come about through words or in actions. Prayer may occur in solitude, in a crowd, or amongst friends.
I’m not too sure whether there is such a thing as being good at prayer. I’m quite certain, however, that the most important thing, quite simply, is to pray.
HATS
We are now back in the time of year when the sun’s radiation becomes more intense and more damaging to skin. It is a sensible precaution for people to wear hats when in the sun. This is especially important for young people, as research has shown that ultra violet damage to the skin is most severe in young and growing skin. In other words, the greatest damage through exposure is likely to occur up to the age of 15 or 16. The extent of this damage often only really becomes apparent a decade or two later when it presents itself in various forms of skin cancer.
It is school policy for students to wear a hat when in the sun. I urge parents to assist the school in this area by insisting that your sons and daughters always bring the school hat or cap with them to school.
WELCOME
As we enter the final term of Year 9, I sincerely welcome back all students and their families. I hope that we will continue to be able to learn from school and that our world will expand with opportunities taken as restrictions are removed and the world reopens. Throughout the term, I encourage all to remember and to practice our focus theme for 2021.
We have much for which to be thankful.
God bless.
Peter Murphy
Year 10
Welcome back to the last term of 2021. I hope that students took the opportunity over the break to take some screen-free time and enjoy the sunshine.
For some students, this will be their last term at MacKillop College for others they will be continuing on at MacKillop. For both of these groups, it is extremely important that they continue to stay focused and diligent until the end of term.
YEAR 10 PDHPE - Term 4
ALL PDHPE lessons for Term 4 are Practical.
This means that students will be required to wear their sport uniform for every timetabled PDHPE lesson.
Please note that this includes the hat and correct athletic trainers (no cons, vans or skate shoes).
GLEN LITTLER
YEAR 10 LEADER OF PASTORAL CARE
Year 11
This week we returned to school and began the HSC course in each of the subjects. Many students were able to drop a subject taking them down to 10 or 11 units of study for their HSC year. This will give them more time to dedicate to the subjects they have chosen to prioritise. A student's timetable will now have more study periods which, provided they use their time wisely, will allow students to get more done during the school day. This is great timing considering the intensity of the HSC work. It is a great time for students to have another look at their organisation; how they plan to use their time; and how and when they will study. As always it is important for students to have their hobbies and sport so that they stay motivated and healthy. Part time work is also essential but it might be a good time to consider the volume of paid work that students can manage with their increased workloads.
This week we also congratulated the Student Representative Council for 2021/2022. It is a great privilege to be a part of the School Leadership team and I am very excited to work with these students throughout the rest of 2021 and 2022.
A huge Congratulations to the leadership team from Year 11 and into Year 12

Year 12
This week marked the start of our 'choose your own adventure' style of learning for the next three weeks. It's a well thought out model by Christine Harmer which allows our Year 12s to attend the classes that are best going to suit their needs as they prepare for the HSC exams. Students are expected to be in attendance for the full school day and they can select a range of classes, such as workshops, seminars and Q&A. It has been difficult for your child to keep their momentum so this change to their pattern of study will hopefully reinvigorate them.
In addition to their school days you should expect that your child is studying at night for about 1.5 - 2 hours. Only a couple of weeks now before the main event so it is time for everyone to put their heads down and work hard.
This week the details for the activities in Week 4 will be determined and communicated to you as soon as possible. If you haven't already, Parents and Carers, can you please action the reminder that was sent out on Wednesday so that we can start preparing for the Celebration of Excellence.
Great to have everyone back and I look forward to preparing your child for what comes next.
Have a great weekend.

Wellbeing
MacKillop College utilises a strengths-based approach; seeing the strengths and capacities of each person and looking for opportunities to support and use the person’s existing strengths to help them develop and learn.
We use the common language of character strengths in our discourse when helping students learn about themselves, others and their subject areas.
IN TERM 4 OUR FOCUS IS ON THE CHARACTER STRENGTH IS GRATITUDE.
What is the nature of this character strength?
The character strength of gratitude involves feeling and expressing a deep sense of thankfulness in life, and more specifically, taking the time to genuinely express thankfulness to others.
This thankfulness can be for specific gifts or thoughtful acts. It could also more generally reflect recognition of what that person contributes to your life. We can be grateful for deliberate acts by others, such as a piece of art from a child, or for spontaneous treasures, such as a cool breeze on your face on a hot day.
What marks gratitude is the psychological response: the transcendent feeling of thankfulness, the sense of having been given a gift by that person or event.
There are two stages of gratitude:
- acknowledging the goodness in our life; and
- recognising the source of this goodness is outside ourselves.
Why focus on gratitude?
Grateful people experience a variety of positive emotions, and those emotions inspire them to act in more virtuous ways – humbler, more persistent, or kinder.
Gratitude tends to foster the character strengths of kindness and love and therefore is closely associated with empathy and with connection to others.
Research findings discovered an attitude of gratitude helps shield us from negativity, reduces stress, boosts self-esteem and performance, improves sleep, enhances the law of attraction, improves our relationships and makes us 25% happier.
Feeling a depth of gratitude is linked to satisfaction with life- it is a crucial element in thriving as a person and as a learner at school.

Whilst level 3 restrictions are in place most music ensembles will be focusing on recording repertoire with assistance from their ensemble directors. These recordings will adhere to level 3 health advice with regard to safe practices and distancing. The goal is to keep making music and hopefully put together something tangible before the end of the year.
All ensemble members are to contact their ensemble directors to confirm recording times and repertoire details. This can be done by checking the ensemble google classroom or emailing ensemble directors directly (details are provided below).
Please note that face to face full ensemble rehearsals cannot recommence until level 3 restrictions are lifted.

COVID Sports Restrictions – Update
In line with the Premier’s announcement regarding COVID-19 restrictions unfortunately, all Lismore Diocesan Sport events and CSNSW (CCC) Sport events have been cancelled for the year.
We understand the disappointment that may follow this announcement, however, as always, the health, safety and wellbeing of all members of the school community was at the heart of this decision.
We thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate this challenging time.
